TOTH, Paul
Paul Toth, Jr., 13-year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Toth of Market street,
Brownsville, was drowned in the Monongahela river Monday afternoon while more
than a score of spectators stood on the bridge helpless to assist the youth.
Persons nearby were summoned by screams of the drowning youth, an inexperienced
swimmer, the first Brownsville river tragedy of the season.
Toth, with several young friends had constructed a diving board at the mouth
of Dunlap's creek and was swimming there when the tragedy occurred.
Strong current at that point is reported to have carried the boy away from the
shore and safety and dragged him below the surface. The boy was carried
some distance from his friends before he sank the first time, coming up about
50 feet from the spot where he disappeared and all methods of resuscitation failed.
The youth graduated last week in the eighth grade as an honor student.
Mr. Toth operates a grocery store in Market street.

The body was removed to the Kisinger funeral home and later taken to the Simko

TRACY— On the 27th of Oct. 1864, at the U. S. General Hospital, Judiciary Square, D. C. Private Jacob Tracy, aged 22 years. Jacob was the son of C. V. Tracy of Menallen tp., Fayette co., Pa. He with a number of others volunteered last March and were sent to camp Copelan, where nearly all of them were taken sick, and quite a number died before their companies entered the service. He was spared to engage in the service during the summer; but that fell disease of the soldiers, Billious Diarrhea laid fast hold upon him, and has done its dreadful work, and he has found an early grave. In his fall our country has lost a true and brave soldier, society a worthy member, and his parents an obedient and affectionate son, his brothers and sisters a fond loving brother. – Which his letters to them after he left home, together with his kindness, and uniform, cheerful obedience to every command while at home, abundantly testify. Jacob was an attentive and diligent scholar in the Sabbath School, and a candid and serious hearer of a peached Gospel; and we trust that these means were made effectual, during his afflictions by the blessing of God to his eternal salvation. And we learn through those who were with him during his last hours that he was happy. Let not his parents feel then that they have lost a son, or his brothers and sisters that they have lost a brother, but rather let them feel to say, that he has merely gone before to that better land which the Lord has promised to all them that love and serve him while here in the wilderness; to be reunited with a dear Mother and others who had entered there before him. And may the sure mercies of David, be the portion of each of them. J. ADAMS

A terrific explosion rocked the Liberty Powder plant at Mount Braddock late this morning and it is believed that four men were killed. Listed as dead were: Leonard McGee, of Morrell; John Holup, High St., Dunbar. Two other employes of the plant were reported missing after the blast: Lenn R. Burns, of 386 N. Gallatin Ave., Uniontown; Robert Trimbath, of Dunbar. At least three other men were injured in the explosion. Taken to Uniontown Hospital were John Morris, of Uniontown, R.D. 1, with lacerations of the eyes, and Dave Caffey, of Footedale, suffering from shock. Neither was believed in serious condition. A third man walked from the plant shortly after the blast with a small bandage on his forehead, after apparently having received first aid treatment. W. C. Crosby, manager of the plant, said that the blast occurred at 10:30 a.m. in the gelatin pack house. The building, approximately 30 by 30 feet in size, was destroyed but there was no widespread fire. Mr. Crosby said that the cause of the explosion was undetermined. Several other small buildings at the plants – they are scattered at some distance from each other for safety purposed – were damaged. The earth-shaking roar of the explosion was heard for miles. It shook houses in Uniontown, and was heard as far away as Edenborn and Brownsville. Windows in houses and buildings at Mount Braddock were smashed, including at least one incident at the nearby Eureka Fire Brick Works. Windows were broken in Connellsville, some five miles away. A mass of smoke rose into the sky after the building collapsed in the blast. Observers in Uniontown and Hopwood reported seeing it spiraling into the air from the explosion scene. Within minutes after the explosion a huge crowd converged on the scene. Roads leading into Mount Braddock were almost blocked by cars and thousands stood outside the plant. Pressed close to the heavy wire gate at the entrance – the gate was kept closed – were wives and other relatives of workers at the plant. They stood outside waiting form some word as to friends and loved ones, and at intervals asked at the gate questions like, “Do you know if so-and-so was there?” or “My son works in the plant – have you heard…..?” Plant officials gave no official notification of the dead and missing until all details could be learned, and until after the families of those killed could be told of the tragedy. Several workers left the plant shortly after the explosion occurred. Some were visibly shaken – one of them, Sam Lafisca, clapsed his baby in his arms as the infant was handed to him. The man who had the bandage on his forehead was led from the plant by a son. He mumbled only, “The jelly pack house went up.” Uniontown Fire Chief J. A. Matheny, who is the county fire marshal, set up a radio- equipped “disaster headquarters” in his car outside the plant gate. Fire departments from all over the county called to see if help was needed. The Uniontown firemen’s ambulance arrived at 11:10 to take the injured to the hospital. Deputy Coroner Todd Burhans, of Dunbar, drove into the plant at 1l:40. State Police reinforcements were rushed to the scene to unsnarl traffic and aid in controlling the crowed outside the gate. Sheriff J. H. Echard also was there, and Jess Vicini, regional director of the United Construction Workers (the union to which Liberty workers belonged) went to the plant. Liberty Powder is a division of Olin-Mathieson Chemical Corp. The plant manufactures dynamite.
Investigation continued today into the cause of yesterday morning’s terrific explosion at the Liberty Powder plant at Mount Braddock, killing four workers. Dead are: Lenn R. Burns, 42, of 386 N. Gallatin Ave., Uniontown; Robert W. Trimbath, 49, of Morrell; Leonard E. McGee, 38, of Morrell, John (Jack) Holub, 34, of High St., Dunbar. Three other workers were injured and received treatment in the emergency room of Uniontown Hospital. They were identified as John Morris, 41, of Uniontown R. D. 1, laceration of the forehead; Dave Gaffey, 27, of Footedale, shock, and Steve Bertovich, 23, of Smock, laceration of the forehead. W. C. Crobsy of Uniontown, manager of the plant, said operations will be closed indefinitely, until a complete investigation into the explosion is made. The four men were killed at 10:30 yesterday morning when an estimated 2,000 pounds of dynamite powder blew up in the gelation pack house, a frame building approximately 30 by 30 feet in size. Mr. Crosby said it has not been definitely established where the men were working when the blast went off, but that 100 men were on that particular shift, one of three at the plant. Safely regulations require that only four men be assigned to the pack house at one time. Mr. Burns had been employed there for the past seven years, and leaves his widow and two children. Mr. Trimbath had worked at the plant for 2 ½ years and leaves his widow and five children, and formerly worked in the mines, as did Leonard McGee, his brother-in-law. Mr. McGee, an ex-infantryman, had served three years and seven months overseas, seeing action in the African Campaign and Normandy invasion. He had worked at the plant for three years and is survived by his widow. The couple had no children. The Fourth victim, John Holub, was a Navy veteran and one of the most decorated servicemen in this area. He served in both the Pacific and European theaters during World War II, and is survived by his widow and a son. He had worked at the plant for nearly eight years. Debris from the blast was scattered about a wide area and a huge hole was left in the ground at the site where the building once stood. Mr. Crosby said cause of the explosion had not been determined. Although it could not be confirmed, it was believed Holub and McGee were inside the building cartridging dynamite when the blast occurred, and that Trimbath and Burns were just outside. At least three buildings near the blast scene were damaged, but Mr. Crosby indicated this morning, that over all damage to the plant in general was not great. There was no widespread fire after the explosion but numerous fire companies in the area stood by at their stations in case aid was needed. Uniontown firemen’s ambulance transported the victims to the hospital and County Fire Marshal J. A. Matheny, Uniontown fire chief, was at the scene to establish radio contact with other fire departments. Investigations of the incident was being carried out by plant officials, The Central Intelligence Agency, State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the office of the Fayette County coroner. Buildings near the blast scene, including several houses and a school, had windows shattered and plaster knocked from walls and ceilings. The shock from the blast shook homes as far away as Point Marion and Edenborn, and was felt plainly in Uniontown, Connellsville, Hopwood and other localities in the immediate area. Rescue workers were able to find little trace of the victims. A West Penn Power Co. crew was on hand immediately following the blast to cut downed wires and inactivate live wires. Hundreds of curious persons, relatives of the employes inside the plant’s gates and passing motorists cluttered the scene following the blast. State Police were sent to the scene to control the situation. Names of the dead were not released until 1 p.m., after the next of kin had been notified. First reports had said only two were killed. Later, two others were listed as missing. Streams of motorists flocked to the scene in darkness last night to see what they could view of the blast scene.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow and Friday for yesterday’s four victims of the tragic explosion at the Liberty Powder plant at Mount Braddock. The Burhans Funeral Home in Dunbar will have charge of services for the three victims from that area – Robert Trimbath of Merrell, Leonard McGee, also of Merrell, and John Holub of High St., Dunbar. Obituary for George Ellsworth Troth, The (Hays, KS) Republican, 12 Aug 1905
George Ellsworth Troth died in Hays, Kansas, August 7th, 1905, at the
age of 44 years. He was born in Brownsville, Fayette county, Pa, March 28th,
1861, and came to Ellis county, Kansas, with his parents, Henry and Catherine
Troth, (both now deceased) in 1884. In 1888 he was united in marriage to Miss
Lillian Joseph who, with one daughter and two sons, remain to mourn the loss
of a loving husband and a fond and indulgent father. He is also survived by three
brothers, Oliver, of Brownsville, Pa.; Joseph, of Mt. Pleasant, South Dakota,
and John, of Hays; and one sister, Mrs. Ida Yost, of Allegheny, Pa. Soon after
landing in Ellis county, Mr. Troth took up a homestead in Smoky Hill township,
on the river of that name, some 16 miles southwest of Hays, upon which he lived
until the time of his fatal illness. His reputation was that of a truly honest
and honorable man. If he had an enemy in the world we never heard it mentioned.
His impulses were all kind, unselfish and just. In politics he was ever (with
the exception of about two years when the populist party was in its zenith) a
staunch and firm republican. He was considered quite a political factor in the
county and his influence was eagerly sought by candidates for public favor. He
will be sadly missed in the community where he was best known by a large circle
of friends who had learned to love, honor and respect him.

At Millsborough, on the 15th ult., of Consumption, Mrs. Elmina Truxal, wife of Doct. N. W. Truxal, in the 18th year of her age. Seven months and a half before her death, when she was married, the deceased was apparently in the most perfect health. Not the slightest indication of constitutional disease was perceptible. Her buoyancy of spirits, elastic step, rose tinged cheeks, all betokened health, happiness, and length of days. But soon the destroyer came. In less than two months, consumption began to leave its desolating marks upon her system; and from one stage to another was she hurried downward to a premature grave. Truly “in the midst of life we are in death.” In the spring when all nature smiled beneath a calm unruffled sky, and spread all around its verdant carpet, glittering with gems, and buds, and flowers, she was a happy bride; when autumn came, with its falling leaves and bleak winds, she was a corpse! She had embraced religion at a camp meeting one year ago last August, and as she began to sink into the cold arms of death, she rejoiced to think that she had, without shame acknowledged her Savior, before thousands of witnesses, “and now,” said she, “he will not be ashamed of me.” Her last days were perfectly tranquil. She spoke of her approaching dissolution with the utmost calmness, and when she became conscious that she was dying she called up her friends, one after another, and without a sigh or tear told them one and all that she was going to heaven and exhorted them to meet her there. Thus was cut down, in the springtime of life, a beloved daughter, an affectionate companion and sister, and one whose virtues, intelligence, and amiability were admired by all her acquaintances. Religion sustained her during her protracted illness, and comforted her in death.--Several days before her death she selected the 4th verse of the 23d Psalm, as a text for her funeral sermon:--”Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadows of death, I will fear no evil.”

Charles E. Tuning, 35 years old, of Coolspring, janitor of the Bute School at Leisenring No. 2 in North Union township, sustained fatal injuries this morning about 10 o'clock when a coupe in which he was driving to the school was struck by the Fairmont-Pittsburg passenger train on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad at Hogsetts Cut. His death occurred at the Uniontown Hospital at 11:45 o'clock. At the Uniontown Hospital it was believed his back was broken. An arm was splintered and crushed and ribs broken. There are also a possibility of internal injury. A dense fog covered the valley and Tuning said he failed to see the approach of the train, which was running late and the presence of which he did not suspect at the hour of day. Neither, he said, did he see the highway danger signal at approach to the crossing. Tuning was about half way across the track when the engine struck his machine, which was lifted on the pilot and carried for 40 feet before being dislodged by a pole along the right of way. David Mundel, following close behind the Tuning car, narrowly escaped colliding with the train, it was said. Mr. Mundel took the injured man to the hospital.

John William TURNER (1908-1939)
Bereaved family of John William Turner, 30, who ended his life Tuesday morning, February 7, 1939, at the little two-room cottage about two miles off the Seaton Lake Road in the mountains, by discharging the contents of a single-barrel shotgun into his head, are completing arrangements for the funeral services to be held Thursday afternoon.
The widow and four children are being cared for by relatives and friends of the WPA worker, who apparently became despondent over his financial condition and blew away the upper portion of his head. He also leaves a number of brothers and sisters residing in the mountain locality.
The body has been removed to the Rodahaver Funeral Home, Somerfield. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the family residence.
The body was discovered by two of his four children who had been sent to feed the chickens by Mrs. Turner, visiting in a neighbor’s home at the time. Screams of the children brought persons to the home where the wife, stunned by the tragedy, was endeavoring to quiet the youngsters. Mrs. Tuner told Trooper John Beck, investigating officer, that she had gone to a neighbor’s home to mind the latter’s children while the woman went on an errand. Her own children accompanied her, leaving her husband alone in the house. Remembering the chickens needed feeding, she sent the two oldest children to the house where they discovered the body of their father, outstretched on the floor, the upper portion of his head blown away by the blast from a single barrel shotgun.
Worry over the poverty-stricken condition of the family and his meager income for its support is believed the cause of the tragedy.
From testimony heard, it was found that John William Turner, 30, of Wharton township, came to his death of February 7 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victim had used a single barreled shotgun to end his life in the kitchen of his humble home from which his wife and children had stepped only a short time before to visit a neighbor.

They were a frugal honest body of workmen, and were above the average miners in intelligence and thrift. They were personally known to nearly every resident of Dunbar and vicinity. Almost all were married and fathers of families ranging in numbers from one to ten children. The following gives more in detail the condition of the families left fatherless by the sad calamity.
