George Dawson SWEARINGEN (1849-1852)
Died, of typhoid fever on the morning of March the 23d, George Dawson, only son of Mrs. Sarah H. Swearingen, of Uniontown. This interesting little boy was removed from this wild and wicked world, just like a tender little flower is removed from the open field and planted in the enclosed garden. He was born April 5, 1849, and was not quite 5 years old when called away from the embrace of a tender mother, and affectionate friends. Young as he was he was a Sunday School scholar, and was full of questions and inquiries of a moral and religious character. How early the infant mind may be taught to think of Heaven and the things which belong to our greatest happiness.
Remainder of obituary is unreadable.
George H. SWEARINGEN (1853-1924)

Notes from contributor:
Interment–Oak Grove Cemetery, Uniontown.
"George H. Swearingen was born in Hopwood in 1853. In 1876 he became a partner with George W. Poster in the general mercantile business and bought out Porter in 1880. While attending the 1893 World's Fair, his building burned down. He soon opened his new store in the brick building on Railroad Street, which is still standing (2002) and is used as a residence. If you look closely, you can see his name still painted on the side of the building and a bronze plate bearing his name and date at the top. His home is still standing on Church Street across from his business. He did over $40,000 worth of business yearly, was a large property holder in the borough, a member of the Royal Arcanum, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Dunbar Presbyterian Church and a strong and active member of the Republican Party. President McKinley appointed him Postmaster at Dunbar, which was confirmed by the US Senate in June of 1897. Swearingen spent several years on the Dunbar Council and was a highly respected citizen of Fayette County. An excerpt from Nelson’s book states, "He enjoys the highest esteem, regard and confidence of all those privileged to know him and an enviable reputation with all classes for his sense of honor and his unimpeachable integrity in business transactions". What an epitaph to a man who contributed much to the history of our town.”

Gladys Newcomer SWINK ( -1984)
It was in early February that this column was to tell of the serious illness of Gladys Newcomer Swink, whose death occurred Feb. 27 in Uniontown's Laurel Rest Home. During her years in the business world, after graduating from Uniontown High School, Class of 1922 Gladys was associated with the Mill Street Hogsett Mill and later with the James Fearer Garage. Following the death of her husband, John L. Swink, Feb. 5, 1968, Gladys continued to maintain her home in their Wayne Street address. During 1983 protracted illnesses were to become a factor in Gladys' life and personal Care centers, as well as rest homes became the pattern of life. In October 1983, Gladys was taken quite ill while under the care at the McKnight Nursing Home, 43 Maple Street, Uniontown. It was downhill from that point on. In and out of the hospital several times during the last six weeks of 1983, Gladys was admitted on December 16, to the Laurel Rest Home for special medical and nursing care . Her condition remained critical throughout this final illness. Gladys was the widow John L. Swink whose working years placed him in the managershiup of the A & P Store on Wayne Street near the couple's home. With loving consideration, Nancy DeVault spent hours and days at her aunt's side to help in any way possible, supporting Nancy in their accepted obligation was her husband William DeVault. A surviving brother of Gladys is William Newcomer of Fairchance.

After his retirement from sports, Swope became an electrical contractor in the service of H. C. Frick Coke Company. It was significant in the light of his former diamond talents that he assist in erecting the lighting equipment at the Griffith Stadium, home of the Washington Senators baseball club.
