Gilbert STEWART ( -1870)

Mrs. Gilbert STEWART ( -1870)

SAD CASE OF DROWNING— On Saturday night last a very distressing accident occurred on the Youghiogheny River opposite Coultersville, by which a man named Gilbert Stewart and his wife lost their lives. They had been at Coultersville shopping with Mr. Wm. Beveridge, a relative, about seven miles above McKeesport, and in company with two men, Byron Malone and Harry Jacobs, started for home on the opposite side of the river. They took passage in an old scow of scarcely sufficient capacity for three persons, which after being out some distance from shore commenced leaking. The parties who were not rowing endeavored to keep the boat afloat by constant bailing, but despite their efforts the water gained on them rapidly. The night being very dark, they became bewildered and lost their way. For more than an hour the leaky craft was kept afloat, but finally sunk. Messrs. Malone and Jacobs succeeded in swimming ashore, although nearly exhausted. Mr. Stewart endeavored to rescue his wife and both were drowned. Mr. Stewart was a coal miner by occupation, and leaves a family of small children in a destitute condition.

BURNED TO DEATH.
We regret to learn that on Monday of last week, Mrs. Elizabeth Stillwagon, of Connellsville, came to her death in the following horrible manner. Her grandson had left the house for a few hours, when on opening the door on his return, the stench of smoke was so great that he could not enter. The alarm was immediately given, the windows were thrown open and water thrown in to quench the fire. On entering, the old lady was found burned to a crisp. It is thought her clothes took fire whilst lighting her pipe. She was one hundred and fifteen years old, and was quite active for one of her age. She had two sons born before the Revolutionary war, in which her husband was a soldier, and at one time a prisoner.

UNIONTOWN, Jan. 21.— Dashing back into dense smoke and roaring flames, which early Sunday morning destroyed his residence near York Run, in a vain effort to save his wife, Mrs. Mary Strawn, 64, Charles Strawn, 70, a native of Connellsville, losing his life. His charred bones were found in the ruins of the residence. Mrs. Strawn, who climbed out through a side window when she was unable to escape by the stairway, hung from the window sill a few seconds and dropped to the ground, a distance of about 15 feet. She suffered a fractured left forearm. She is a patient in Uniontown Hospital. When George, a son, first discovered the fire, flames filled the heat register in his room. Smoke was pouring into the three bedrooms on the second floor and the downstairs rooms appeared to be a mass of fire. As George, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Friend and a two-year-old child and the elderly Mr. Strawn groped their way down stairs, Mrs. Strawn was missed. Her husband neighbors say, dashed back into the residence then a mass of flames, calling his wife’s name. Several times he repeated “Mom.” Then the voice ceased and was heard no more. In the meantime, the wife had managed to get to a window at the side of the house, not in the sections he and her husband had occupied. She cried for a ladder but none was available. Steve Machini, 21, called to her to drop to the ground. As she did so, he made an unsuccessful attempt to catch her. She fell and a bone in her forearm snapped. Other members of the family had gone for aid. The residence of John Machini, a short distance from the fire, was scorched but not seriously damaged. Mr. Strawn, for 40 years had been employed by the H. C. Frick Coke Company at York Run. Long before his death he was placed on the retired list. He is survived by his widow, four sons, George, Porter, Lelsie and Amadee, and a daughter, Mrs. Leona Friend. One son, Franklin, a flier, was killed in action in the South Pacific. Mr. Strawn, who was born in Connellsville, also leaves three brothers, Joel S. Strawn of Connellsville, George of Point Marion and Harry of Akron, Ohio, and one sister, Mrs. Walter Titlow of Uniontown. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Sharp funeral home at Fairchance in charge of Rev. H. D. Purrier, pastor of the Dawson Baptist Church, formerly of Fairchance. Burial will be made in Smithfield Cemetery.

Martin Elwell STRAWN (1859-1937)

M. E. STRAWN DIES AFTER OPERATION
Dawson Man Had Pushed His Way to High Place in Business
ACTIVE FOR MORE THAN FIFTY YEARS

The active business career of Martin E. Strawn, 77 years old, of Dawson, which extended over more than half a century, was brought to an end at 8 o’clock Sunday night with his death in Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh where he had undergone an operation Saturday. Although ailing for some time, he had not closed his activity until he was admitted to the hospital on April 14. He had appeared to be coming out as well as could be expected following the operation when his condition took a turn for the worse.

Mr. Strawn’s end came almost six years to the day of that of his wife, Mrs. Emma Hough Strawn, who passed away on Sunday June 21, 1931. Mr. Strawn’s death came on a Sunday, June 20. One of the best known residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Mr. Strawn had been affiliated with the coal and coke and banking business for the greater part of his more than 50 years of active business career.

Martin Elwell Strawn was born on September 16, 1859, on a farm near Perryopolis, the son of the late Joel and Mary Husher Strawn. He received a brief education in the township public schools but left the classroom to go to work on his father’s farm, remaining there until he became 20 years of age. At this time, he entered the employment of the Baugh & Drum store at Fitz Henry. It was during his work there that he met Miss Hough who on May 27, 1884, became his wife. After the marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Strawn moved to Dawson and it was there that he ventured into business, opening a general merchandise store. In 1892, Mr. Strawn was induced by the late James Cochran, a pioneer coal and coke operator, to sell his own business and become manager of the Star Junction store for the Washington Coal & Coke Company, which operated the Star Supply Company. The efficient manner in which he conducted the store business brought him many promotions and Mr. Strawn became a member of the company board of directors and later vice-president, a position he had at the time the company sold its interests to the H. C. Frick Coke Company in 1930. He also was vice-president of the Washington Run Railroad Company, affiliated with the coal concern in Perry township.

Mr. Strawn was interested in the founding of three financial institutions–two of which withstood the rigors of the depression and the “era” of bank closings–the First National Bank of Dawson and the First National Bank of Perryopolis. The other bank, in founding of which he participated, in the National Bank & Trust Company of Connellsville. He was a member of its board of directors. A son, Joseph H. Strawn, who preceded his father in death, a year ago, had served as president of the bank. Mr. Strawn at the time of his death was vice-president of the Dawson and Perryopolis banks. He was elected a director of the Perryopolis bank on July 12, 1902, at the time of its organization and had served continuously since then. He was elected to the vice-presidency on April 10, 1909, being named to succeed the late Dr. J. H. Davidson. He was named a director of the Dawson bank on December 4, 1915, and as vice-president on January 8, 1924. Mr. Strawn was also interested in the coal business, being vice-president of both the Canyon Coke & Coke Company of Morgantown, W. Va., and the Cochran Coal & Coke of Dawson and Morgantown. He had been affiliated with the latter concern since its organization 35 years ago. Although always manifesting considerable interest in the civic life of his community, Mr. Strawn always preferred to remain in the background. His fellow citizens, however, prevailed on him to serve on council for a number of years. He was always active in activities that contributed to the development of the Dawson region. A life-long member of Philip G. Cochran Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church at Dawson, Mr. Strawn was serving as chairman of the board of trustees at his death. He also was a member of James Cochran Lodge, Free & Accepted Masons.

Mr. Strawn is survived by four children: William of Morgantown, W. Va., Allen of Fayette City; Mrs. Nana Mae Crossland of Donora and Clarence of Pittsburgh. There are also nine grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Dawson Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev. Dr. Thomas Charlesworth, pastor, officiating. Interment will be made in Mount Washington Cemetery near Perryopolis in charge of the undertaking firm of Ira Blair & Sons of Perryopolis.

bullet Catherine STRICKLER died in 1914. Her obit was contributed to the Fayette County USGenWeb Project.(143)

The funeral of Mrs. Catherine Strickler, wife of Conrad Strickler, was held at the family residence, 40 South Twelfth Street, yesterday afternoon.  The death of Mrs. Strickler, Tuesday morning marked the close of a life so full of love and helpfulness in every community in which she has lived.

Mr. and Mrs. Strickler were married 57 years ago in their native state of Pennsylvania.  There their family was born.  In 1893 or 94 they came to California and purchased the ranch near Edenvale which was their home until six years ago, when they moved to San Jose.

Since living in San Jose Mrs. Strickler has been in broken health.  She has been a great sufferer in body, but her remarkable fortitude and patience has made her always a cheerful, affectionate companion.  While practically a shut-in for six years, she kept her interest in all the activities which had been dear to her when health permitted.  She was always devoted to her family and to the last, in spite of her suffering, she was concerned for the happiness of those about her.  She was a consistent Christian woman of high character and warm heart.  Her aged husband will miss her love and inspiration and has the sympathy of many friends.

Four of her children with members of their families were present at the funeral, S.G. Strickler and Mrs. G.W. Curry of San Jose; William Strickler of Chicago and P.E. Strickler of Seattle.

Died

STRICKLER— July 21st, 1868, near Dawson's Station, of Dropsy, Mrs. Hannah Strickler, wife of Uriah Strickler, dec'd, aged 63 years and 20 days. The deceased had been for many years, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and adorned her Christian profession by a walk and conversation becoming the Gospel. Her last illness, which was protracted, was born with commendation, patience and resignation. Her reliance upon the merits and mediation of her Savior was calm and uninterrupted. Through all her sufferings, to the end, Jesus was precious to her soul while passing through the valley of the shadow of death. We may truly say, “Her end was peace.” And while her children and friends mourn their loss, they are consoled by the assurance she has left them, that for her to die was great gain.

Phebe Jane Strickler, daughter of B. W. and E. A. Strickler, died Sept. 29th, of diphtheria. The deceased was a girl of 12 years. It may not seem strange to us that the young are so suddenly called away when we know that
"Leaves have their time to fall,
And flowers to wither at the north wind's breath,
And stars to set; but all--
Thou hast all seasons for thine own, O, death!"
