MACH, MARY
MRS. MARY MACH, 30 years old, died Saturday at her home at Leisenring No. 1 of
influenza.
Courier 11-30-1918
BROWNSVILLE, November 27th.— That the bones of any of the immortal Washington family should ever mingle with the filth of an Englishman's cow stable is an idea sufficiently startling to almost cause a sensation in the deserted halls of Mt. Vernon. Yet, such a state of affairs exists. On the property of J. W. Jeffries, in the yard of a cow stable in this town, is the obscure and forgotten resting place of two of George Washington's nephews. On the sandstone slab covering one of the graves is the inscription:
On the other two can be faintly seen these inscriptions:
The three young men arrived at Brownsville, early in the year 1818 with a gang of negroes, their occupation being that of slave-drivers. They camped out on the hill north of Dunlap's Creek. A terrible fever broke out among them and prevented them from starting South as soon as they wanted to. The negroes died off at a fearful rate. At last the three white men who were driving the party felt sick of the same disease. Machen died last, and before he passed away he arranged with a Brownsville man, Copeland, to drive the surrounding slaves the balance of the journey. Copeland started with them, but he too was attacked by the fever before he had proceeded many days, and died among strangers.
The Washington brothers and Machen were buried in the old fort where the stones can be seen. A neat brick wall was put up around their mounds by order of their relatives and in this wall the stone slabs were fixed. But in the course of time the property changed hands, the place was sadly neglected, the brick wall fell down, and the grave stones were allowed to lay lengthwise on the ground. The two young Washingtons were grand-nephews of President Washington, and Machen was a relative of the two Washingtons.

An argument over $13 proved fatal to Joe Mack, Puritan miner, who died in the
Uniontown hospital at 12:45 a.m. today, from a punctured lung and other injuries
received when he was brutally beaten, police say by George Kozel, late Monday
night.
Kozel, was arrested shortly after Mack's death by State Trooper George H. Benson
and will be charged with murder.
According to police Kozel lost #13, and accused Mack of having taken it.
The accusations were hurled after both men, who "batched" together
in a company house at Puritan, had imbibed a considerable quantity of liquor,
and were followed by the attack.
Kozel, according to police, used nothing but his fists, but these weapons were
so effective Mack never recovered. After the smoke of battle cleared, Dr. H.
G. Sangston, of McClellandtown, was summoned and treated the victim and then,
yesterday afternoon directed his removal to the Uniontown hospital.
While horribly hurt, Mack was able to walk into the institution and for five
minutes stood at the reception desk and gave Mrs. Anna Lloyd, the secretary,
a full account of the fight.
He suffered a relapse late last night, however, and died in spite of efforts
of physicians to save his life.
Coroner S.A. Baltz planned to conduct an autopsy on the body today, and Kozel
was scheduled for a session with Trooper Benson, District Attorney Wade K. Newell
and Secretary William Peril for the purpose of making any statements he might
care to submit.
Both men were unmarried and had lived in the Puritan vicinity for a number of
years. Both were coal miners.

Mary Jane Bielecki MALAGO (1914-2011)
Mary J. Malego
Mt Pleasant
Mary Jane (Bielecki) Malego, 96, passed away Monday, April 4, 2011, at Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born Sept. 18, 1914, in Uniontown, the daughter of the late John and Anna (Bienia) Bielecki, the eldest daughter in a family of 13 children. Mary graduated from Transfiguration School and went to work at a very young age to help support her family. She worked as a lady's maid for the Jamison family in Greensburg until the time of her marriage, traveling with them to Pinehurst, N.C., for the winters. On Aug. 7, 1940, she married Joseph D. Malego at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. Together they built their stone house on Park Avenue, Mary mixing the mortar and Joe laying the stones and doing finish carpentry. Mary and Joe marked their 57th wedding anniversary before his death on Oct. 21, 1997. She was a parishioner of Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant, and a member of its Christian Mothers Society. She was a member of the local card club and sewing circle, the Stitch and Chatter Club, which met at a member's home for needlework and socializing. She frequently worked at the Penn Francis Hotel on Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, which was owned by her brother, Frank Bielecki. Mary was an adherent of naturopathic living and an avid organic gardener long before organic gardening became poplar. She grew and preserved her own vegetables, which she generously shared with her wide circle of family and friends. She was known as an excellent cook and baker, and proudly held several blue ribbons for Best Apple Pie from the Fayette County fair. She was a skilled needlewoman, who created hooked rugs and works in crewel embroidery, which continue to be treasured by their recipients. Mary was strongly devoted to her family and delighted in her three grandchildren. She was the first to lend a hand in time of need or tragedy for family, friends or neighbors. Her faith in God was especially evident during her last illness. Just as she had for many years made sure that her brothers or sisters had had a crucifix in their hands during their last days, she died with a crucifix and rosary in her hands. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by five brothers, Francis, Stanley, John, Edward and Walter Bielecki: and four sisters, Caroline and Helen Bielecki, Josephine Bielecki Kaib and Nellie Bielecki Trice. Mary is survived by her two sons, Joseph D. Malego Jr. and Dennis J. Malego, both at home in Mt. Death notice for Edward H. Manger appeared in the Daily News Standard, Uniontown, PA, November 17, 1902. Complete text is not currently available.
UNIONTOWN, Aug. 11.— Joseph Manger, aged 48, one of the more prominent Germans in Fayette county, committed suicide this morning in an upper room of his dyeing establishment in the rear of his home on Church street. Despondency over nervous trouble was the cause. Mrs. Barbara Manger, his wife, is prostrated with grief over her husband’s rash act and her condition is serious. She discovered his dead body about 10:30 this morning.
Yesterday Manger complained more than usual and told his wife he thought he would “end it all.” Thoughtlessly, she asked, “Well, why don’t you?” and the incident was forgotten. This morning Manger arose at the usual time but put on his best clothes. He went into the dyeing establishment at the rear of the pretty Church street home. Mrs. Manger went to the dyeing rooms about 10:30 but found no one there. Going upstairs she saw her husband lying face downward on the floor. A broken eighth-inch rope was suspended from the ceiling, a few feet above, while a chair was overturned. The rope and chair told the gruesome story. With a scream, Mrs. Manger fainted. She fell across the dead body of her husband and was in this position when found by Jacob Hornbeck, a neighbor. Drs. Heminton and Lakin were summoned but Manger was beyond mortal aid. Mrs. Manger is in a serious condition. Deputy Coroner Evans was summoned and viewed the remains.
Manger is survived by his wife and one son, Joseph, aged 18. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, who will have charge of the funeral, the C. M. B. A. and the German Beneficial Society of St. John’s church.

Joshua MARSH died in 1864. His obit was contributed to the Fayette County USGenWeb
Project.(11)
MARSHOn Sunday the 6th instant at his residence in Uniontown, after a lingering
and painful illness, JOSHUA MARSH aged 72 years.
Deceased was a native of Massachusetts, but came to Uniontown about twenty-three
years ago, where he continued to reside until his death. In the Spring
of 1857 having business in the Post Office Department at Washington City, he
repaired thither and stopping at the National Hotel fell a victim to that mysterious
disease which caused the death of so many of the distinguished men of our country.
From that date, he lingered with but slight intervals of returning strength,
until at last, the poison (as it is supposed) got the mastery, and thus dies
Joshua Marsh, one of our most worthy and respected citizens. In social
life, Mr. Marsh was remarkable for his equanimity and uniformity of temper and
disposition. These admirable traits of character secured him the confidence
and respect of all who knew him, and it may be said with truth that he was universally
esteemed.
He leaves a widow and children to mourn his death as none others can mourn, and
a large circle of friends and admirers who will long remember him as one who
adorned the walks of private life and left a good example worthy to be emulated.

Ada Wadsworth MARSHALL (1884-1969)
When it comes to baking pies, Mrs. Ada Wadsworth Marshall of Piper Hollow, Mount Braddock, is second to none. Mrs. Marshall often bakes as many as 35 or 40 pies in one day, and sells them. The remarkable thing about it is her age. Mrs. Marshall is 85. A native of Piper Hollow, she has been baking for 40 years. She recalls the old days around the turn of the century when there was no electricity in the Mount Braddock area and people used lanterns. Mrs. Marshall has had a long and rich life.
The number of descendants she has is really something to write home about. She has 19 children, 80 grandchildren, more than 100 great-grandchildren, and 32 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Marshall was married to William Wadsworth for 56 years. He died in 1957. In 1962 at the age of 78, she married James Marshall. He died 13 months later, in 1963. Mrs. Marshall says she is able to keep going because she “lives for the Lord. My strength comes from the Lord who made Heaven and Earth”.
Many of Mrs. Marshall’s descendants will be present when the family reunion is held May 17 at the Lions Club property in Dunbar. “We’ll have games, music, and lots to eat,” says Mrs. Marshall.
Mrs. Ada Wadsworth Marshall, 85, of Mount Braddock, died Thursday in Uniontown Hospital. She leaves 252 direct descendants.
She is survived by two sons, Willard Wadsworth of Minerva, Ohio, and Ernest of Lemont; six daughters, Mrs. Charles (Rhoda) McNutt of Lemont Furnace, Mrs. Ernest (Viola) Mossburg of Mt. Braddock, Mrs. Ivan (Pauline) Cole of Hardy ,Ark., Mrs. Pauline (Zelda) Coffman of Ashtabula, Ohio, Mrs. James (Pearl) Bartley of Cold Springs, N.Y. , and Mrs. Garnelle Coffman of Uniontown; 70 grandchildren; 139 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren.
