John H. INKS died in 1864. His obit was contributed to the Fayette County USGenWeb
Project.(11)
DEATH OF JOHN H. INKS
Died in the Hospital at Washington D.C. June 16the 1864, of a wound received
in one of the battles near Richmond on the 31st of May; John H. Inks a member
of Co. K, 116th Penna. Regiment, aged 19 years 2 months and 4 days
The deceased was a son of Mr. George W. Inks, was raised in the vicinity of Uniontown,
and was a young man who was greatly beloved for his upright character, and many
good qualities of head and heart by all who knew him; the pride and comfort of
his parents and family.-
As a soldier he was honored for his gallantry and good conduct. He received
a severe wound in the thigh while bravely contending with the enemy who was only
a very few yards from him, and by powerful effort succeeded in crawling far enough
back to prevent him from falling into enemy's hands; He was brought to Washington
on the 4th of June, where he received great care and attention from a lady of
that city, named Mrs. Morse, a Methodist Minister from Michigan, who was visiting
a wounded brother, and others. His father and sister also had the sad pleasure
of being with him and ministering to his wants during his last days.
The Minister above referred to, furnished the bereaved friends with a history
of the last days of the deceased, of which the following is the conclusion;
June 16th, John suffered extremely all last night. Was nearly unconscious
all night. It seemed hard for the Spirit to get free from the body.
He died early this morning. His Spirit left a scene of great sufferingwhere
it constantly heard the cries and groans of the dying, and without doubt took
its flight to the land of the blessed. 'Where there is no more sorrow,
no more sighing, no more pain, no more war and no more dying, all these former
things are passed away.'
He gave me a dollar to buy a keepsake, a book or something else, that I could
always keep to remember him by as one I had so largely aidedunder Godin
preparing to leave the world. I am sure I shall always remember him, and
be thankful for the privilege I have had in smoothing the passage of one more
of the precious souls for whom Jesus died.
May God aid the Father, Mother, and Brothers and Sisters in submitting all to
him, and in living so they can meet their Son and Brother on the Shining Shore
that is just before, where parting is no more, is the most sincere prayer of
your earnest friend.

Mrs. John Irons
This estimable lady, relict of the late Maj. John Irons, for many years Editor
and proprietor of the "Messenger" and of the Genius of Liberty died
of Congestive Fever at the residence of her son-in-law, Capt. Jno. W. Skiles,
of Gallion, Ohio, on the 9th inst. It was our good fortune to know the
deceased long and intimately, having been for nearly six years and inmate of
her house; and we risk nothing in saying that she was a woman of many and rare
excellencies--Combining a vigorous intellect and remarkable decision of character
with great sweetness of disposition, she commanded the respect and won the affection
of all who knew her. Though devotedly attached to her husband and children,
and a keeper at home, no wife ever had a larger circle of attached friends; and
there have been few who sympathized more sincerely in the griefs and trials of
their neighbors. Her thousand acts of unobtrusive and self-forgetting kindness
will make her memory precious to many who read this poor tribute to her worth,
as well as to her surviving relatives. It may be gratifying to her acquaintances
to know that she died in the triumphs of the Christian faith, retaining tan unclouded
mind to the last and conversing freely with the friends around her. Freed from
earth and earthly failing, her spirit is with the God of the meek and the pure
in heart. She was a good and true woman.
Genius of Liberty May 7, 1863
DIED, in this place on Saturday the 22d ult., Miss Mary Irons, in the 18th year of her age. The hand of affection is again summoned to pay the last sad tribute to the memory of a departed friend. Amid the fullness of life and joy, the pale messenger of death has been suddenly and unexpectedly brought before us, and the name of Mary is now written on the tablet of the dead. Yes, she is gone; those eyes that had beheld only the sun-light of eighteen summers, are forever closed upon the things of earth and time. Her sun has set in the great ocean of eternity, and her cold grave has closed over her ashes. A period of two years has elapsed since she experienced a change of heart and united herself with the C. P. Church. Her she continued until death, with his irresistible power severed the connecting link 'twixt her and earth, when her soul took its flight to a better and brighter world. In obedience to the command recorded in the Bible she had “remembered her Creator in the days of her youth,” and as an heir of everlasting life now sits crowned at God's right hand a worthy recipient of his mercy and goodness. Her voice is now mingling in unison with the immortal choirs of heaven, in chanting the praises of that. Being who gave her existence, and whom it has pleased to call her from time to eternity at so early an age.
But a few evenings previous to her illness, the choir of the Church of which she was a member met at the residence of a friend. Fair cheeks and eyes sparkling with youth glittered in that small assemblage, Mary was there. She seemed cheerful, joyous and happy. The bloom of health rested upon her cheek, and her whole appearance gave evidence of a long and happy life. But alas! It was not permitted us to realize the happy results usually attending such external evidence. Some supernatural power had decreed that she must soon bid adieu to that choir, and join a band beyond the skies. A few days from this time a violent fever seized her, which set a defiance that skill of her physician and the power of medicine. The dawn of each succeeding morn found her on the decline; her friends became alarmed and began to despair of her recovery. On the morning of the eight day of her illness, little or no hope remained; her friends stood weeping around her dying bed when she was heard to utter from her feverish lips, her last call for her mother, the being, who with maternal anxiety and solicitude had watched over her from infancy, and whose heart must soon be overwhelmed with grief at her early death. Evening approached, every fleeting moment seemed bringing her nearer and nearer the threshold of eternity. The last word she was heard to utter was in prayer to that God upo9n whose bosom she so soon was to rest. About one short hour before her spirit had fled, we stood at the bedside, in deep and pensive mediation; her cheek was pale and emaciated, but it seemed as though death was unwilling to destroy the bright luster of her eyes. But ere long her eyelids placidly closed and Mary slept the sleep that knows no waking. Immediately the news of her death was borne to the ears of her many friends in our community and tears were the evidences of the grief occasioned by such an unexpected shock. In her death her friends and family have suffered a sad bereavement. She possessed many virtues and noble traits of character, which won for her the esteem and friendship of all who knew her. She was naturally cheerful—she entered on scenes of festivity with gladness, and found in the social circle among endeared acquaintances, a high gratification. She possessed also a mild and tender nature. She was ever ready to shed a tear over a lost friend, and ever willing to share the sorrows and misfortune of those she loved.
She was a kind sister and an affectionate daughter, and her death has created a melancholy sensation in the hearts of her kindred and friends, which will not soon be forgotten. Death at all times is a source of sorrow to the bereaved; but weep not mother, sisters, friends. 'Tis true that the lips that once delighted you with kind words are forever at rest—that the hand which was ever ready to lend its assistance in time of need is forever still, and that the heart which but lately beat high with hope and love toward you, will throb on earth no more; but remember that the star of the rest, one has only set in the gloom of the earthly horizon, and that its rise in another world may be more brilliant. DIED
On the 14th of October, on her way from St. Joseph, Mo., to Louisville, Ky.,
Mrs. Ann Irwin, of Consumption, in the 53rd year of her age.
The deceased was the widow of the late Matthew Irwin of this place. She had been
for some three years residing with her son-in-law, Capt. Isaac Jones in Louisville
Ky., but owing to her declining health determined to visit her son at St. Joseph,
Mo., with the hope that she might benefit by the trip. This failing to relieve
her, she was returning to Louisville, but ere she reached the threshhold of her
daughter's home, the __ spark had gone out, and her soul had fled to the spirit
land. She died on the boat on which she was a passenger.
Mrs. Irwin was extensively known, and had many relatives in the county, to whom
this will be sad intelligence. she was one of those amiable and useful ladies
to society that always have friends. She was ever found at the bed-side of the
sick - a ministering angel to their wants, and a comforter of them in their afflictions.
Her name is near and dear to many, who will hold it in sweet remembrance until
they shall bid adieu to worldly things and follow her through "the dark
valley and shadow of death." But her relative "mount not as those that
have no hope." Having early in life made peace with her Creator, connected
herself with the Episcopal church, and having continued to walk uprightly in
the sight of God," though her after life, she "died in the hope of
a glorious immortality beyond the grave>'
