General Notes: Carpenter and Beulah had 10 boys and 4 girls. They were early pioneers to Elk County. Natives of Maine, they came to Clearfield County, PA in 1820. They lived one year there, then went to Punxsutawney, PA until 1828, when they moved to Benezette Township, Elk County. They apparently endured many hardships incident to pioneer life, bringing all their provisions in a canoe from Lock Haven ( a distance of 75 miles), taking two and a half days to push the canoe up the stream. Carpenter raised his family on a 600 acre farm in Benezette. The cemetery on Winslow Hill is a part of this farm. Winslow Hill is the most scenic spot in the Benezette area because of the view from the top of thehill.
He was elected supervisor in the first Benezette Township elections of 1846. In 1844 was listed a resident taxpayer of Jay township alongwith Reuben , E.C. and Charles Winslow. Carpenter and Beulah lived with son George during the latter years of their life.

Benezette, was born in Maine, May 25,1820, the second son of ten boys and four girls born to Carpenter andBeulah (Keene) Winslow, also natives of Maine, who came to Clearfieldcounty, Penn., in 1820. He and his brother Thomas were in Company G ot the original Bucktails,(Kanes rifle regt.,1st Pa.rifles,13th Pa reserves,42ndPa. regt.) but he was listed as not being present when the Bucktails were mustered out in 1864. I found several muster rolls of company G in a small museum in Gettysburg,and all but one have this same statement on them.However, one indicates that he transfered to the regular army, but no unit was given.A search of the army records turn up nothing. He is not on the placard at the Pa monument in Gettysburg. We are related thru their oldest brother Charles.(per Bruce Smith genforum)

General Notes: William bought the farm he was born on in 1875. He helped his father convert the forest into farm land. He received his education in the common schools of Benezette.
He stepped backward into a stairwell on the barn floor and fell to the basement. He was paralyzed and the doctor felt that his neck and spine were fractured. He was taken to the University Hospital in Philadelphia where he died. From the Renova Daily Record: Winslow was takento the hospital on Saturday in a special train after he had fallen down stairs at home. The run between Driftwood and that city was made in record time, the train having been given the right of way. The special was met at Thirty Second and Market Streets by an ambulance from the hospital. An operation was performed immediately but proved of no avail. They were members of the Church of the Messiah.
His wife Mary died within the year from cancer. She never knew that her husband had died because of her health.
Their Winslow homestead (as of August 2002) still stands but is in terrible disrepair and no longer owned by the family. It is located at the bottom of the valley on Winslow Hill.
WILLIAM K. WINSLOW, farmer, P.O. Benezette, is a son of Charles. K. and Rebecca (Hicks). Winslow, the eldest of seven children, and was born in Benezette township, Elk Co., Penn., August 20, 1846, upon the farm where he now resides, and which he purchased in 1875. He received his education in the common schools of Benezette. He married, November 6, 1870, Miss Minnie Lesh, of St. Mary's, Penn., and to them was born one child, Minnie (now deceased). His wife died, August 10, 1872, and in January, 1875, he married Miss Mary M., a daughter of Andrew J. andEliza M. Johnston, of DuBois, Penn. Mr. and Mrs. Winslow have bad a family of eight children: Eva E., Lorena M. (deceased), Bruce M., Charles B. (deceased), Sylvanus J., William S., Merton H. and Ella E. Mi. and Mrs. Winslow are members of the Church of the Messiah, at Mount Pleasant, Penn.

Inaddition to a small farm and the coal mines, Bill and Gladys starteda small town convenience store out of their house (the old Lafe Winslow home which was once a part roller skating rink) in Benezette; had the only phone that the whole town used; ran the gas filling station; and had the first running water in town In the 40's they moved to NewCastle PA and he worked as a electrician. Member of the Epworth Methodist Church. Lived in New Castle Pa for 18 years and was employed with the Johnson Bronze Co. serving as a member of the electrical maintenance crew retiring in 1957. Eva Estelle Winslow married a mercantile owner, Harvey Smith, of Sinnemahoning. The marriage was short-lived, and the couple separated before the birth of their son, Bruce Winslow Smith. Eva and the child remained at her parents? home in Benezette for a number of years before moving to Michigan. Eva made her living by sewing and keeping house, and eventually, she and her son Windy returned to Pennsylvania and lived in Ridgway. Eva was visiting her sister, Ella, in Michigan at the time of her death in 1967.
Bruce remembers ----- Grandma (Eva) lived at the Winslow home for years with Dad (Windy). When Uncle Mert and Aunt Ada took over the farm, Dad was a young man, but had become the family laborer. Whichever of the uncles was mowing, or planting, or baling, that?s where Dad?s services were needed. Some of his tales of farm life were amusing, while others related just how tough times were for the family in the early part of the twentieth century. At some point, Grandma and Dad moved to Michigan. When they moved back to Ridgway, they lived in a house where Grandma could make a living as a seamstress. Later, she kept house for Ruth Redding, and had her own room where she could pursue her sewing. She used to make clothes for my sisters and me, and sometimes, we weren?t too happy to be seen in them. Dad and Mom bought a second house in Ridgway, and rented the upstairs apartment. Aunt Ella visited from Michigan, and decided that Dad needed to make a place for his mother, so the tenants were moved out, and Grandma was moved into the upstairs apartment. She lived there until the early sixties, when she went to a nursing home. Once again, Aunt Ella found fault with the accommodations, and Grandma was taken to Michigan. She fell in Ella?s home,and was hospitalized, where she passed away at the age of 91, in 1967.
We have discovered some bits of family history that are counter to what we had believed in our younger years. First of all, I had believed that my grandfather Smith was just a gentleman visitor, and there seemed to be an abiding hatred of the man where Grandma was concerned. Harvey Smith was a mercantile operator in Sinnemahoning,; he had previously been married and had four children. Nothing was ever mentioned in my presence about this other family. A few years ago, my sister, Kathy, gave me a photo of Grandma and Harvey on their wedding day, but it wasn?t until we found a wedding application in Cameron County files for Grandma and Harvey that we learned he was a widower. We then found the graves of his first wife and infant daughter, but there was no trace of Harvey. The Internet has proved to be a remarkable source of information --- we found the Hicks cousins this way --- and, we have alsofound the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Harvey?s first family. We learned that it was Harvey who filed for divorce because Grandma wouldn?t resume housekeeping with him once he had recovered from a bankruptcy situation in his store. He followed the lumbering trade, and moved several times, but Grandma would not leave the homestead to accompany him. She was obviously being influenced by her mother, as attested to in the divorce decree.
Dad would often tell of the time he returned home from work, when he was in his twenties, to find "her husband" abusing Grandma, and threw the s.o.b. down the stairs, telling him never to show his face again. We thought he might have been referring to Harvey, but with our new knowledge about their divorce when Dad was only five or six years old, and Harvey?s marriage for the third time in New York State and subsequent death in 1926, we have concluded that the fellow Dad encountered was probably a man by the name of VanWye. My sisters know about a second marriage for Grandma to someone Dad called the dumb Dutchman, but we haven?t been able to locate any records to substantiate this.

night, Aug. 29, after a long illness. She was born Mary Winslow in Benezette, Pa and moved to Boardman with her family in 1956. She worked many years in the Mahoning Bank and loved her beloved Boardman. Herhusband, Robert ³Jake² Nay, passed away in 1979. She is survived by two sons and their families, Bob ³Butch² Nay of Jacksonville Fla., and Bill of Centreville, Va.; a sister, Jean McNulty of Cincinnati; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Also well recall a Julius Jones that worked there as a clerk. And another worker there--"Shorty Shaffer" The store had a glass bowtop counter,where they had the candy displayed.AsI would stand there looking at the candies,as Mom or Dad was shopping,one of the clerks would give me a piece of "Penny candy". A really BIG event for me.The store was a general store--a sort of a combination
grocery-hardware-dry goods-clothing-animal feed&care items and would you believe,even had a gasoline pump at the front of the store. Constituted as 306th Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 28 Jan 1942. Activated on 1 Mar 1942. Trained for combat with B-17's. Moved to England, Aug-Sep 1942, and assigned to Eighth AF. During combat, Oct 1942-Apr 1945, operated primarily against strategic targets, striking locomotive works at Lille, railroad yards at Rouen, submarine pens at Bordeaux, shipbuilding yards at Vegesack, ball-bearing works at Schweinfurt, oil plants at Merseburg, marshalling yards at Stuttgart, a foundry at Hannover, a chemical plant at Ludwigshafen, aircraft factories at Leipzig,and other objectives on the Continent. Took part in the first penetration into Germany by heavy bombers of Eighth AF on 27 Jan 1943 by attacking U-boat yards at Wilhelmshaven. Sgt Maynard H Smith received the Medal of Honor for his performance on 1 May 1943: when the aircraft onwhich he was a gunner was hit by the enemy and fires were ignited in the radio compartment and waist sections, the sergeant threw explodingammunition overboard, manned a gun until the German fighters were driven off, administered first aid to the wounded tail gunner, and extinguished the fire. Without fighter escort and in the face of powerful opposition, the 306th completed an assault against aircraft factories incentral Germany on 11 Jan 1944, being awarded a DUC for the mission. Received another DUC for action during Big Week, the intensive campaign against the German aircraft industry, 2~25 Feb 1944: although hazardous weather forced supporting elements to abandon the mission, the group effectively bombarded an aircraft assembly plant at Bernberg on 22Feb. Often supported ground forces and attacked interdictory targets in addition to its strategic operations. Helped to prepare for the invasion of Normandy by striking airfields and marshalling yards in France, Belgium, and Germany; backed the assault on 6 Jun 1944 by raiding railroad bridges and coastal guns. Assisted ground forces during the StLo breakthrough in Jul. Covered the airborne invasion of Holland in Sep. Helped stop the advance of German armies in the Battle of the Bulge, Dec 1944-Jan 1945, by attacking airfields and marshalling yards. Bombed enemy positions in support of the airborne assault across the Rhine in Mar 1945. Remained in the theater after V-E Day as part of United States Air Forces in Europe, and engaged in special photographic mapping duty in western Europe and North Africa.
