William Penn's Ships - 1681/2
William Penn said that there were 23 ships that that delivered settlers to
Pennsylvania with him.
Since travel was difficult in 1680's, it is likely that they sailed from a
Port close to home. The ports those ships came from were: London, Bristol,
Liverpool, Scarbough (Yorkshire coast), Belfast (Ireland), Cornwall (wsw)
There were no passenger lists but they only kept a list of those with Duty
Goods (merchants mainly). These ship are listed in order of arrival dates
in Pa.
- 1. "Bristol Factor" (Bristol) left Oct 1681 arr: Dec 15, 1681. It only
carried 16 adults and some children as passengers. Listed John Bezer from
Wiltshire, along with his servant Joseph Cloud, also Nathaniel Evens and John
Martin. I was interested in those names because they were often associated
and neighbors of my ancester. I long suspected he came from Wiltshire area
so the Bristol port and people that arrived from there and lived in the
Bethel area were of special interest.
- 2. "John & Sarah" (London). Arr: March 1681/2. Walter Martin of Middlesex
who settled on Naaman's Creek a passenger. He was a merchant.
- 3. Unknown ship from New England brought one passenger, Richard Lundy of
Co. of Devon in Feb 1682.
- 4. "Amity" (London). Left 23 Apr 1682 Arr: 3 Aug 1682. William and John
