Mrs. D. C. Herrington.
Mrs. Dewitt C. Herrington died on Sunday, the 24th inst.
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Andrews, East
Main street, at 9:50 p.m. The immediate cause of death was asthma but she had been in failing health and much
suffering from that and other causes for five years past. Deceased was born at Meadville, Pa. Oct 27 1839,
to Edward and Sarah Atkinson Stebbins, and her whole
life was spent in this vicinity. Her maternal grandfather, Hon. Thomas
Atkinson, came to Meadville from Germantown, Pa., in 1804. He published the
Crawford Messenger, the first newspaper in this region, and also represented the
county in the state legislature. Her father, Edward Stebbins,
came to Meadville from West Springfield, Mass., in 1819 and took up land in that
vicinity. Jan. 6, 1856, she was married to Charles
William Frey, born in Wiesbaden, Germany, who came to this country early in life, by whom, she had two
children, Maggie Louise, and Mary Adelaide, of whom
the latter now Mrs. Andrews, survives her. Mr. Frey
died in 1864 and in 1868 she was married to Dewitt C. Herrington of Crawford county, by whom she had
one son, Edward Augustus, who also survives her. Mrs.
Herrington has been a faithful member of Christ church, Meadville, from which the funeral services were held.
Three brothers and one sister survive her, Edward
Stebbins of Mt. Dora, Fla.; Col. Thomas Stebbins of
Meadville; Frederick Stebbins of Cleveland O. and Mrs.
Henry C. Laycock of Rochester, Pa. - Titusville Herald.
