He was born 17 Nov 1880 in Mercer Cnty, a son of Henry Lesley & Elizabeth Brown Bates. On 17 May 1904, he married Mary Osborne-Salem. He was a retired farmer. He had been a member of State Line Methodist Church for 50 years. Surviving are his wife; 3 children: Alice Hogue-Sharon; Evelyn Hogue-Albuquerque NM; Bartly Bates-StateLine; a bro: Merle Bates-Jamestwn & 2 grandchildren.
