World War I Hero
H Dean Shriver, 87, a lifelong resident of the Diamond community, died at Titusville Hospital at 8:55 am Monday, Nov 8, 1982. He had been in poor health for the past two years. He was born at the Homestead Farm, just east of his current residence, on Dec 17, 1894, a son of Jacob M and Anna Ghering Shriver. After attending the elementary school at Diamond, he entered Edinboro State Normal School where he graduated in 1915. His yearbook quoted him as having been the best all-around athlete in the college until that time. He had also been a baseball player in the local teams of his home area. He taught school a term, then entered Allegheny College for a time. Mr Shriver enlisted in World War I on May 9, 1917, at Oil City and served in Squad H-17. He served in the French Theater of the war for 13 months. He was discharged as a corporal at Camp Dix, NJ, on June 16, 1919. He was the next-to-last surviving World War I veteran in Plum Township at the time of his death. Mr Shriver then engaged in farming and had a retail milk route in Titusville for a few years until 1930 when he moved to his current residence. After the death of his father in 1927, Mr Shriver became postmaster of the Diamond office, a position he held until that office was closed by the government on Dec 30, 1964. He was also engaged in carpentry for many years. He was a member of the Cleo J Ross American Legion Post 368 of Titusville, the Carpenters Union of Titusville, the Diamond Grange (now Sugarcreek Grange) and he was former secretary of the Diamond Cemetery Association. On Jan 2, 1923, he married Goldie E Edwards of Titusville, She died May 2, 1925. He later married Elizabeth W Buchan of Titusville, April 18, 1927. Her death occurred May 1, 1937. His last marriage was to Grace Davison of Diamond. They were married Sept 17, 1941, and she died May 20, 1971. Surviving are 4 children; 6 step-children; 11 grandchildren; 24 step-grandchildren; a sister, Isla Strawbridge of Diamond; and two nephews, Harold and Howard Strawbridge of Diamond. He was preceded in death by one stepson, Clair E Davison, and one step-grandson, Edward D Davison. Friends may call at the Leo N Hennes Funeral Home...The funeral will be held there at 1 pm Thursday with John Morris, minister of the church of Christ of Titusville, assisted by Pastor Larry Bidwell of the First Assembly of God of Titusville. Interment will be in Diamond Cemetery.
