World War I Hero
"Arthur G Maier, 93, a well-known Franklin, Pa, jeweler and an active member of the American Legion for many years, died at 10:50 pm Tuesday, May 29, 1984, in the Venango Manor where he had resided since August, 1982. For many years he had resided at 314 W 16th St, Franklin. Mr Maier was born in Titusville, Jan 2, 1891, a son of John B and Julia B Maier. He was graduated from Titusville High School and Titusville Business College and later completed watchmaking and engraving study at the Bowman School of Technology in Lancaster. For many years, he was the only engraver in Northwestern Pennsylvania and his skill brought many people here for that type of work. He started in the jewelry business in 1915, continuing his career in Franklin until his retirement in 1964. During World War I, he served with Company B of the 6th US Engineers Third Division from 1917 until 1919. He was a corporal and was wounded in combat in France, receiving the Purple Heart. When he returned to Franklin in 1919, he started his employment with George Feldman and continued that association for many years. For a short time he operated his own jewelry business. In 1945 he purchased the former Feldman Jewelry Store. He continued to operate that establishment until he sold the business in 1964. Mr Maier had a keen interest in community activities and for more than 60 years he was an active member of Franklin Post 476, American Legion, and was an avid supporter of Venango Voiture 788, 40&8. He was also a lifetime honorary member of the Jesse G Greer Post 1835, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had been a member of Franklin Lodge 110, BPO Elks, for 63 years; a member of the Franklin Kiwanis Club and former member of the First Baptist Church. He was currently a member of Blooming Valley United Methodist Church. Mr Maier was married to the former Marguerite Young on June 21, 1923, and she died Feb 3, 1954. He later married Virginia Shaffer Green and she died Oct 29, 1973. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs David R (Barbara) Pearson of Meadville; three granddaughters....; three great-grandchildren....; and a sister, Mrs John (Isabelle) Willis of Winnsboro, Texas. A grandson, David Pearson; four sisters, Charlotte Maier, Mathilda Herrington, Julia Nagengast and Lena K Maier, and three brothers, John, Carl and William Maier, died previously. Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel of Franklin.... Private funeral services will be held Friday with interment in Franklin Cemetery."
