Harold D. Akens

World War I Hero

Harold was born in Padan Aram (although he often listed Andover as his place of birth) February 26, 1895 to David Morrison and Hattie L. (Thompson) Akens. He was married three times - 1st to Kathryn Rebecca Claybaugh Stratton on April 11, 1914 in Wheeling, West Virginia; 2nd to Margaret Rose Hirtner on April 27, 1957; then 3rd to Mary B. (her surname unknown).
A World War I veteran, Harold served in 11 Company 2 Tng Bn, 155 Dep Brigade until May 27, 1918, when he switched to Company E, 146th Infantry in which he served until discharge. He was promoted to PFC June 10, 1918 and then embarked for overseas June 15, 1918 aboard the Leviathan - leaving from Hoboken, New Jersey. He was slightly wounded in action on September 28, 1918. He returned from Brest, France aboard the Aquitania March 23, 1919 and was honorably discharged April 15, 1919. Military engagements: Avencourt Baccarat Sector; Avencourt Sector; Meuse-Argonne; Pannes Sector; Ypres Lys Sector.
In addition to his military service, Harold served as Linesville Postmaster from 1935 until 1965. He was a member of the Linesville Universalist Church, the Linesville Fire Department, and was the first commander of the Linesville American Legion.
