John Stewart was born in 1753 in Paxtang Township, Dauphin County, PA.  He enlisted in 1775 in Dauphin County, Pa., in the Pennsylvania Continental line. In 1776 he was in Capt. Joseph Sherer's company and was captured by the British and imprisoned for a long time on the Prison Ship Jersey. He served for 30 months and received a pension. 

He married Mary Robeson.   

John Stewart died in 1837 in North Shenango, Crawford County, PA.
