The Rev. Dr. Owen James, former pastor of the First Baptist church, this city, died suddenly yesterday in Johnstown, Pa., while on his way home from morning service. Rev. James was a brother-in-law of John R. Thomas, of West Scranton, and was well known in this city.
Dr. James was born in South Wales in 1847. He came to the United States when a young man and entered Bucknell University at Lewisburg, from which he was graduated in 1876. He was graduated from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1879. In 1895 he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity, from the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y. Dr. James was one of the best known Baptist ministers in Pennsylvania. Dr. James was ordained a minister in 1879. He was pastor following that of the North church in Washington, D.C.; the First Baptist church in Scranton, Pa.; Hatboro, near Philadelphia, Hollidaysburg, Titusville and Johnstown. From 1895 until 1898 he was president of Roger Williams' University in Nashville, Tenn. The remains will be taken to Scranton for interment Wednesday.
