LEWIS WILLIAM THICKSTUN was born in Cussewago township, Crawford county, Pennsylvania, March 24th, 1823. He was brought up on the farm and still follows that occupation. He was educated in the common schools of Cussewago township, finishing his schooling at the Kingsville Academy, Ohio, in October, 1847. In September, 1872 he became one of the proprietors of the Crawford Journal and published it until April, 1873. He remained in the Journal office altogether three years, and in the Republican office one year in an editorial capacity. He was appointed transcribing clerk in the State Senate and served in that capacity during the winters of 1872 and 1873. In February, 1877, he was elected Justice of the Peace in Cussewago, and the following year President of the Cussewago Independent School District, and also to the Pennsylvania State Legislature on the Greenback ticket.
