ISRAEL THICKSTUN was born at Mosiertown, June
17th, 1884, and is the son of David Thickstun, who came to Crawford county when only six years of age. When grown up he
settled at Mosiertown. Here Israel grew up and acquired a common school education, also attending the academy at Kingsville,
Ohio. In 1861 Mr. Thickstun enlisted in Company II, Eighty-third Regiment, known as the Erie Regiment, and served three
months. He then returned and assisted in recruiting a company, and was elected Second Lieutenant, and afterwards was promoted
to First Lieutenant. At the end of four month's service, with his regiment, he was detailed to the Signal Corps, in which
he served three years, meanwhile being promoted to Captain. Among the leading engagements in which Mr. Thickstun participated
were the battles of Gettysburg and the Wilderness. He was mustered out February, 1864, and, returning home, bought the place
where he now resides-200 acres. His occupation since his return from the army has been stock raising and farming. Mr.
Thickstun has held no other offices of his township than Assessor. He was married May, 1875, to Miss E. L., daughter of S. P.
Andrews, of Gates County, N. Y.
