Putnam, Ransom farmer, P.O. Centreville, was
born December 18, 1826, in Ellery, Chautauqua Co., N.Y., son of Leonard Putnam, who was born in Vermont, and when four years
of age went with his parents, who settled in Chautauqua County, N.Y., in 1807. There be married Sally Kelly, born January 25,
1808, in Genesee County, same State. They came to Rome Township, this county, in 1840, settling in the woods, where they
cleared their farm. They reared four children: Alfred, Ransom, John Sidney, and Mrs. Harriet Proudfit, who died July 30,
1856. Mr. Putnam departed this life November 1, 1850. His widow still resides on the old homestead. Our subject was twice
married, on first occasion November 5, 1848, to Fidelia J. Howard, who died January 30, 1860, leaving two children: Sidney R.
and Mrs. Alvicia D. Gilbert. Mr. Putnam married for his second wife Nancy Phillips, daughter of Godfrey and Sarah Phillips,
of Venango County, Penn. By this union there are four children: Minnie L., born July 22, 1867; Mertie, born February 8, 1869;
Alta May, born June 13, 1873, and Clara F., born January 30, 1877. They have also adopted into their family Martin, son of
David Baugher. Mr. Putnam is a man of strict integrity and a worthy representative of one of the leading pioneer families of
this township. He is a member of the Baptist Church. In politics he is a Republican.
