REV. JOEL GREEN. Joel Greene is a son of John Greene and grandson of Col. Christopher Greene, of revolutionary memory. Joel received the benefits of a common school, after which his education was all self acquired. He has been a resident of Madison, Cortland, and Canandaigua counties, New York; Rhode Island, and of different localities in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky. His life has been an active and varied one. He has been editor, preacher, and painter. In 1840 he founded the Seventh Day Baptist Register at Dedney township, Madison county, New York and published it a year and sold out, buying the Sacketts Harbor Journal, which he conducted one year, when he bought the Watertown Register, merged it into the Black River Journal, weekly, tri-weekly and daily. This he published for six years, carrying on at the same time a grocery, hat, cap and fur store, and preaching at Adams and Houndsfield as the regular pastor. In 1849 he was burnt out and devoted himself principally to the ministry, which he had begun in his eighteenth year. He has labored altogether as a pastor and missionary sixty-three years. Among the places where he has labored are, Adams, Houndsfield, and in Cortland county. New York, where he was located twelve years, about six years in Kentucky, and several years as missionary in the Valley of the Mississippi. He came to Mosiertown, Cussewago township, in 1863, and remained pastor of the Carmel Baptist Church for five years, after which he was engaged in missionary work, and finally was pastor of the Seven Day Baptist Church for two years, resigning in 1877. His later labors have been chiefly in retirement, though he has spent considerable effort in writing and lecturing upon the Sunday law. He was married August, 1826, to Miss Mary Plink, of Cortland county, daughter of George Plink, deceased.
