John Davenport

Davenport, John, drayman, Meadville, was born in Ulster County, N.Y., August 10, 1816, and is a son of Isaac and Rebecca (Munson) Davenport, natives of New York, and of English descent, the former a farmer. They had a family of nine children, seven of them now living, of whom John is the fourth. His schooling was obtained in his native county, and early in life he went as boatman on the Delaware & Hudson Canal, at which occupation he spent many years. He was married in 1845 to Jane Ann Lounsberry, also a native of Ulster County, N. Y., and of Holland descent. They had nine children, seven now living: Levi, freight clerk on the New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio Railroad; Mary Ellen, wife of Frank Bartlett; Anna, wife of Anson B. Leberman; Harriet, wife of Edward Orris, merchant in Meadville; Philip; J. E. and Blanche. Mrs. Davenport is a member of the Park Avenue Congregational Church. In politics Mr. Davenport is Republican. Our subject came to Meadville in 1866, and is now owner of six wagons and thirteen horses. In 1879 he built an ice house, in which he annually stores 1,000 tons of ice. His eldest son was a member of the Fifty-sixth New York Infantry during the two last years of the war of the Rebellion.
