JOSIAH
J. COULTER Was born February 18, 1836, in Venango township,
Crawford County. At eight years of age he removed with his parents to
Greenwood township where he lived on the farm until 16 years of age,
gaining common school education, and attending Meadville Academy. He
entered Allegheny College in 1855, but went back on the farm and staid
five years, when his father died in 1861. Going to Petroleum Centre he
engaged for three years in the flour and feed business, and then returned
to Meadville and was in the grocery trade for about two years. His next
move was to Greenwood township, where, after some time, he became
Interested in the Greenwood Mills, where his attention has been engaged
principally since: He was elected, in February 1878, secretary of the
Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and was re-elected in 1879, in
which capacity he is now serving.
