"The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting
the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James Cowie (ASN: 40392), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action
while serving with Company K, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, A.E.F., near St. Georges, France, 3 November 1918. While advancing
with his platoon under heavy machine-gun fire and after providing shelter for his men Sergeant Cowie, with two of his men, outflanked a gun, capturing it and 18 prisoners."
