Prominent Clearfielder Harry F. Bigler Jr. Dies
Harry Fred Bigler Jr., prominent Clearfield resident, died early last evening following an extended illness. He would have marked his 75th birthday Dec. 27.
Mr. Bigler was born at Clearfield Dec. 27, 1889, a son of Harry Fred and Florence (Graham) Bigler, both now deceased. His grandfather was William Bigler, governor of Pennsylvania from 1852 to 1855.
A graduate of Mercersburg Academy and Cornell University, Mr. Bigler enlisted in the U.S. Army Jan. 5, 1918 and served with the 311th Infantry, 78th Division in France During World War I. When Troop A. 104th Calvary, Pennsylvania National Guard,
was formed at Clearfield Jan. 26, 1927, he was appointed as the troop's first captain.
Form many years interested in the coal business, Mr. Bigler also served a term as Clearfield County Treasurer in 1924-38. Before his retirement he was employed as a right-of-way engineer with the State Highways Department.
He was a lifelong member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Clearfield.
Mr. Bigler is survived by his wife, the former Helen Dufton; three children, Mrs. F. H. (Virginia) Tompkins Jr., of Nashville, Tenn.,
Mrs. John A. (Marian) Sobel III, Clearfield, and Harry Fred Bigler III of Marietta, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and one brother, William Bigler of Clearfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth and Marian Bigler Good.
Funeral services will be held from the Fred B. Leavy Funeral Home tomorrow at a.m. with the Rev. A. Claude Clever officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 o'clock and until time of services tomorrow. The family has requested that flowers be omitted.
