The son of William/Wilhelm & Mary Magdaline (Minnigh) Rex, in 1850 the family lived in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, but in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Pike Township, Clearfield County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg May 10, 1861, and mustered into federal service there May 29 as a private with Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Rifles (13th Pennsylvania Reserves, 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry, "The Old Bucktails"). He was hospitalized for illness at Annapolis, Maryland, where he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate June 10, 1862, for "rheumatism & general debility."

He married Nerissa R. Warrick October 8, 1867, and fathered Harry G. (b. 07/15/71), Blanche (b. 12/03/74, d. 02/02/77), John Blanchard (b. 04/07/79), Sarah Maude (b. 08/16/83 - married Clarence Bloom), Gus, and William. In 1880, he lived in Beccaria, Clearfield County.
