The son of John & Catherine Reesman, in 1860 he was a shoemaker living in Washington Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, although he claimed that when
he enlisted in the army (see below) he was then a resident of Fairfield, Adams County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had black hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. E, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry,
and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. He then enlisted in Gettysburg September 1, 1862, mustered into federal service at Carlisle September 6
as a private with Co. E, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry, but transferred to Co. F, date not yet found. Promoted to corporal May 12, 1863, and to sergeant August 11, 1864,
he honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865.
