Civil War Veteran


The son of Sarah MeHaffie, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his mother and brother Hamilton in Centre Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bloomfield, Perry County, August 20, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 31 as a private with Co. D, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer October 10, 1863, at Key West, Florida, but deserted June 1, 1865, at Washington DC. He was charged $1.87 loss of camp gear and a total or $18.90 for goods he had purchased on credit from the regimental sutler. On January 15, 1886, the War Department cancelled the outstanding desertion charge and issued June 9, 1865, as his honorable discharge date.

After the war, he married Isabella M. Rosensteel and fathered Josiah (b. @1867), Martha (b. @1869), Margaret Elizabeth (b. 08/02/72 - married Benjamin Franklin Moore), Daisy L. (b. 10/06/75 - married William A. Adams), Pearl (b. @1879), and Andrew Byron (b. 06/04/86).
