DIED ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE AT 2ND BULL RUN, VA.88TH PA INFANTRY

Inscription

Lieutenant Colonel Joseph A. McLean killed while leading the 88th Rect. P.V. in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run August 30 1862. As his men bent over him to carry him away he said "Boys drop me and save yourselves. I am dying." Buried on the field where he fell among the many marked "unknown". Aged 39 years.
