Samuel Hoover

Civil War Veteran


The son of Philip & Magdaline "Lena" (Greenawalt) Hoover, in 1850 he lived with his family in Snyder Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Taylor Township, Centre County, and stood 5' 6" tall with light hair and hazel eyes. He married Rosanna V. Rush December 25, 1862, and fathered William T. (b. 04/13/65), Sarah E. "Sallie" (b. @1867), and Philip Allen (b. 05/05/68). A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 26, 1861, as a corporal with Co. D, 14th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 7, 1861, at Carlisle, but is strangely missing from the company register. He then enlisted in Harrisburg September 5, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 6 as a private with Co. C, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. Rosanna died in 1869, and he married Julia Maria Keys ca. 1875, fathering Olga F. (b. @1874) and Rosa Lina (b. @1876). After the war, he lived in Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, and Jefferson counties and died in Taylor Township, Centre County, from "rheumatism superinduced by excessive uric acid & also albumen found in urine."
