Joseph Alexander

BIOGRAPHY: Joseph was a Republican in the State Legislature. He enlisted into the Civil War on August 14, 1862 and served with Co. B, 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry also known as the Bucktail Brigade, he was wounded on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, in the charge of General Stone's brigade and remained on the field until a Colored stretcher-bearer of the Confederate Army took him to a barn on the McPherson Farm where he stayed until July 4 when Lee abandoned the place, John was then sent north to guard prisoners at Elmira, New York. He was discharged on June 27, 1865. Joseph's first vote was for Abraham Lincoln and he was a member of the guard of honor that escorted President Lincoln from the White House to the Capitol where he laid in state. Joseph was the Town Clerk of Woodward Twp., an auditor, supervisor, overseer of the poor, and an accessor for two terms, a school director in Madera, an enumerator in 1880 for Madera, served 3 years as Jury Commissioner and held Office of the Prothonatory in the year 1883.
