1. NICHOLAS1 RUNCKEL was born 1716 in Runckel, Germany, and died 1774 in Bern Twp, Berks County, PA. He married ELIZABETH UNKNOWN.
Notes for NICHOLAS RUNCKEL:
The different families of the name of Runkle who trace their ancestry back to the early emigrants are principally descendants of those who came to America between the years 1740 and 1750. Among these were Nickel or Nicholas Runckel, who came with Johan in the3 ship "Loyal Judith" from Rotterdam, last from Cowes, Sept 2, 1743, and Jacob Runckel, who came in the ship Hampshie "from Rotterdam, last from Falmouthk Sept 17, 1748.

Nickel, or Nicholas, settled in Bern Twp, Berks County , PA. He lived about ten miles northwest of the city of Reading. The first record that I have found for him is a tax record of 1759. He is listed on the Tax Indices for the years of 1770 - 1789. The report states that he had land in Berks County 1770, 1771, 1772, 1773, 1779, 1781 and that he was married. There are other Runkle's listed on this report such as John, Michael, Wendle, William and Catharine.
Nicholas purchased a tract of land from Sabastian Husnrick on February 19, 1772. He purchased another tract of land from Thomas and William Penn.
Nicholas' will fact shows up in the Abstract of Wills and Administrations, Berks County. NICHOLAS RUNCKEL, BERN, APR 18, 1774, ADM TO ELIZABETH RUNCKEL, THE WIDOW.
Nickel settled in Bern Twp., Berks County, PA about 10 miles northwest of Reading. The first record of him is the 1759 Tax Records.
Bellemans (Salem) Union Church, Mohrsville, PA. This church had a log church building erected in 1746, a brick building was built in 1815 and a church built in 1922 is currently in use. Nicholas and his brother both signed the bible that is from the original church. Only those that gave monies to support the church were eligible to be buried in the church cemetery. Nicholas' son, Jacob is buried in the cemetery that surrounds the 1815 historical church.
Personal note: in 2002 I was able to tour the historical building. It is only used at this time for special services or weddings. Photos are available for this church as well as Jacob's tombstone. (Nancy Runkle Rambo)

Elias Y. Mertz, residing near Moselem Springs, Richmond township, Berks county, has been a tenant farmer for the past twenty-one years on the farm of John Madeira, which consists of 101 acres of land in an excellent state of cultivation. Mr. Mertz was born May 2, 1858, in Richmond township.
The progenitor of the Mertz family in America was Johannes Mertz, who was one of 242 passengers on the ship "Ann," which sailed from Rotterdam, last from Cowes. He was a son of Johannes Mertz of Stockhausen, Wurtemberg, about thirty-five miles northwest of Frankfort-on-the-Main, and forty miles northeast of Coblentz, in Germany. Johannes Mertz, the emigrant, landed at Philadelphia Sept. 28, 1749. He settled in the vicinity of Lyons, Berks county, and the church located near his home was named Mertz church in honor of him. The births of his first four children are recorded there. On May 24, 1756, he married Rosina Hase, daughter of Melchior Hase. Their children were: Johannes, born July 17, 1757; Anna Maria, born Dec 2, 1760; Maria Salome, born May 24, 1763; Melchior, born April 11, 1765; and Peter, born March 9, 1769, in Oley township, died June 16, 1833, at Orwigsburg, PA., where he is buried. Peter married Catharine Philips, of Bern township, Berks county, born in 1770, died in 1853, and their children were: Christina (1799-1884); John (1801-1880); Peter; Samuel; Kate (m. Jacob Bock) Rosina (m. Jacob Deibert); and Elizabeth (m. Jacob Runkel).

It is with a sad heart that I write to remember the wonderful legacy my Aunt Myrtle left. I am now filled with wonderful memories, from making applesauce, to caring for children, to wrapping presents. Some of my fondest memories are playing in the office and wanting so much to be "Just like her". Aunt Myrtle would take me and my siblings Christimas shopping each year so we could buy my mom a Christmas gift. She always had time for a visit, and I loved to go to her house. Now you are in my father's house. I will always love you.

In 1999 I wrote "The Runkle Family of York County, PA and Associated Families." The Nicholas Runkle family of Berks County is one of those. Nicholas was a half-brother of our York County immigrant. They were sons of Martin Runkle (ca 1683-1757) in Wackernheim, Germany. I believe your website has Nicholas as a son of Caspar Runkle. Martin and Caspar were brothers and the Virginia Runkles and Wendel Runkle are sons of Caspar. We have the church records from Germany. There are two active young men working on the Nicholas Runkle family and I believe the Steve Runkle of Mechanicsburg, who is lecturing on the Susquehanna River, is also a descendant. It is so important that we get everyone started out on the "right foot" as far as the Runkle immigrants are concerned, because there are about twelve. Hope this can be fixed before too much more damage has been done.
