Charles Augustus Graeff was down on the Mexican Border from June, 1916, to March, 1917, when he returned home and was mustered out. He at once entered the State service, then the Federal service, on July 15, 1917, and left for France on May 18, 1918. After serving overseas for a year, he was discharged, May 16, 1919. Before and after his army experience, Mr. Graeff was a brakeman on the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad for about five years. Afterward he engaged in the auto accessories business. Then, on July 1, 1924, he was appointed postmaster, by President Coolidge, of Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, for four years.

The Graeff family to which Charles Augustus Graeff belongs originally settled in Berks County. The early records are lost, but they are supposed to have come from England or Wales, although within the memory of living members of the family some of them spoke "Pennsylvania Dutch." Mr. Graeff's grandfather, Daniel Graeff, served with the Reading Artillery during the Civil War, and his father, Clinton Graeff, was a section boss in the coal storage yards. His mother was Anna C. (Lindermuth) Graeff.

Charles Augustus Graeff was born at Schuylkill Haven, April 2, 1894, and attended the public schools of his native town. Politically he is a Republican, and he is very active in party matters. He has a wide acquaintance throughout his section and has considerable influence among railroad men and World War veterans. He has often campaigned throughout the section.

Being of a warm and friendly nature, and enjoying close contact with his fellowmen, Mr. Graeff is an active member of a number of such societies as the Odd Fellows, the Knights of Malta, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 207, of Pottsville, and the Junior Order American Mechanics, being past counsellor of the latter. He is also a past Vice-Commander of the American Legion. His church affiliation is as a member of the United Evangelical Church.
