As health officer of the city of Allentown, Dr. Butz is well known throughout the city, and as former coroner of Lehigh County his energy and ability were notable in a wider area.
Dr. Butz was born August 1, 1873, in Hereford, Berks County, Pennsylvania, the son of Alfred K. and Mary K. Butz. At an early age his parents moved to Allentown, where he obtained his early education in the public schools, and then attended the Allentown Preparatory School, and the American Business College. Following this, he went to the University of Pennsylvania, graduating there with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery and with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1899. For ten years, from 1900 to 1910, Dr. Butz served on the staff of the Allentown Hospital. At present he is on the staffs of the State Hospital, of Allentown Hospital and the Sacred Heart Hospital, and is lecturer to the nurses on Public Health and Sanitation. Dr. Butz served as coroner of Lehigh County from 1906 to 1908 under the administration of former Governor Pennypacker. He was also prison physician for thirteen years, from 1902 to 1915, and has been health officer of Allentown for ten years, from 1915 to 1925. During the past thirteen years, also, he has been the local representative of the state Department of Health; has filled the position of county medical director; and has served on the staff of the State Tuberculosis Dispensary from 1908 to 1925. For the past sixteen years Dr. Butz has been secretary of the Lehigh County Medical Society. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, and the Pennsylvania State Medical Society. He has served as State Supervisor of Medical Inspection of Schools for six counties (second and third-class districts), Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Berks, Schuylkill and Lehigh, 1924-25.
On November 27, 1902, Dr. Butz was married to Florence Mary Hartman of Allentown, and they have three children: 1. Mary T., who is a teacher in the public schools of Allentown. 2. William A., who is attending public school. 3. J. Treichler, Jr., also attending public school.
