Jacob S. Livingood (23d J.D., Berks), born July 19, 1820; died August 25, 1906. Admitted to the Bar January 7, 1845.
At the time of his death he was the oldest member of the Berks County Bar--86 years of age. He was born at Womelsdorf, and belonged to, a family of Swiss-German descent, settled for a century previous in the Tulpehocken region. He was educated at the Womelsdorf Academy and Marshall College, Mercersburg; read law with Charles Davis, Esq., of Reading; subsequently took a course at the Yale Law School. For nearly sixty years he practised his profession with unremitting industry and undivided attention; was one of its leaders, enjoying a very large clientage and accumulating considerable estate. A lawyer of the old school, his professional characteristics were studious habits, close attention to office duties and punctuality and exactness in business methods. For many years he was a member of the County Board of Legal Examiners, and there were graduated from his office a large number of students. From the reorganization of the Berks County Bar Association in 1888 until his death he was its president. Upon his decease the Association united in a marked tribute to his professional attainments and high standing as a citizen.
