BASHOR, BASHORE, BESHORE, GIBBLE, KLINE posted by Larry Nelson on Tuesday, June 15, 1999

I am looking for info on ancestors who lived in Berks County, Bethal area in the mid 1700's-1870's...I know that there is at least one (1) Bashore cemetary on the "old" farm, maybe two.
It should be across the road from the "Old Merkey Meeting House", home of the Church of the Brethren.
The Family name has been recorded in differant ways since the early 1700's, but the three listed are most common.( BESHORE, BASHOR, BASHORE)
KLINE & GIBBLE are surnames that were either married into or married to a BASHOR...ect.
Thanks for any info that can be passed along.

BENNETHUM, GRUBER, LAUCKS, MINNICH, RUHL, SCHAUER, SCHMIDT, STUPP, UNRAH, WAGNER, WILHELM posted by Susan Cunningham on Thursday, July 15, 1999

I have my line traced back to Johannes Andreas / Johwn Andrew Bennethum, tanner of Womelsdorf, who married Maria Barbara Minnich. Earlier than that, I have only bits and pieces that I cannot fit together. His line uses the Bennethum spelling but other lines favor Benadum, Benedum, and even Benadom.
A Henrich Benadum left Ulmet, Germany in 1754 (if I recall correctly) without being manumetted
A Henrich Benadum appears on a Reading, PA tax list in the 1760s.
A Wilhelm Benedum from Berks Co. served in the Revolution.
George and Peter appear in the 1790 Census. (John was too young.)
A George Benedum helped establish the United Brethern Church in Ohio.
A Peter went south ca. 1800 to Frederick, MD and then on to Loudon Co., VA.
Some of these folks may have been John's brothers or else his uncles. Does any one have this sorted outPlease send e-mail

BROWN, CLINE, DEWEES, KLEIN, MARTIN posted by John Clement on Thursday, July 15, 1999

I have a letter writen in 1865 by George Martin DEWEES, in which he wrote: The great philosopher Jacob MARTIN, our great-great-grandfather was a great astromomer and mathematician. He is buried on the Ephrata Burial Ground, his tombstone inscribed Philosopher J. Martin.
Assuming 25 years per generation, this would make a 2nd great-grandfather born about 100 years earlier.
But I have another source, "Old Landmarks of Canton, Stark county, Ohio" which states his 1st great-grandfather Jacob MARTIN 1725-1790 is buried at Ephrata, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Perhaps 1st and 2nd great-grandfathers were both named Jacob MARTIN and perhaps they are both buried at Ephrata.
If so, the descendancy from 2nd GGrandfather Jacob MARTIN to George Martin DEWEES is probably:
Jacob MARTIN c1700-

:.Jacob MARTIN 1725-1790, buried Ephrata, Lancaster Co., PA

BARD, BEARD, CLEVENSTINE, EMRECKEN, SCHRACH posted by Sue Phillips on Thursday, July 15, 1999

I would like to share information with others researching the Clevenstine family of Berks and Chester counties. Johan Henrich Kliebensteinn (or Henry Clevenstine) sailed into the port of Philadelphia on the Ship Sally in 1770. Henry served in the Berks County Militia during the Revolution. Henry married first Mary Emrecken, second Catharine ——, and third, Sarah Schrach, a widow. At the time of his death in 1805, Henry's thirteen children petitioned the court to appoint guardians and to protect their rights to his estate. While many descendants remained in the Berks and Chester counties area, daughter Elizabeth Clevenstine married into the Bitler family and moved to Franklin and then Auglaize Counties in Ohio about 1834. Daughter Mary Clevenstine married Amos Beard. Please help me locate Henry Clevenstine in the 1790 and 1800 U.S. census.

BITLER, LONG, SNYDER, WOLFF posted by Sue Phillips on Thursday, July 15, 1999

I would like to share information with others researching the Bitler family of Berks and Schuylkill counties in Pennsylvania. The family was established by John (Johannes) Bitler, who likely arrived in 1736 on the Ship Harle. John Bitler and wife Hanna Long had at least three sons: John, known as "Long" John; Daniel; and Michael. John Bitler served in the Berks County Militia during the Revolution. All three remained in the Berks County area and raised large families. The focus of my research is on "Long" John Bitler, his wife Maria Elizabeth Wolff, and their eldest son Daniel. Daniel married Elizabeth Clevenstine in 1806; all seven of their children were born in the Berks County area. In 1832, Daniel and Elizabeth removed to Franklin County, Ohio, and in 1834 they removed to Auglaize County, Ohio, founding St. Johns in Clay Township. Daniel and Elizabeth's oldest son William Bitler married Rebecca Snyder in 1828 in Schuylkill County.
