Martin, William, a prosperous farmer and substantial citizen of Smith twp., is
of Irish descent. James Martin, his grandfather, was born in Ireland, where he
was married, afterward coming to America and locating permantently in
Jerfferson Twp., Allegheny Co., Penn., where they lived to an advanced age.
The children born to this pioneer couple were: James (who was a shoemaker of
Holmes County, Ohio), John (a former resident of Ohio), Robert (who lived in
Ohio), Ann (first married to David Canada, then became Mrs. Deerfield, and
resided in southern Indiana), and William. All of the family are now deceased,
there having been thirteen children, of whom those named lived to a mature age.
Additional Comments:
James Martin came to America in or before 1790, based on the birthdate of the
oldest living son known from census records, Robert, who was born in PA about
1790. As there were 13 children born to the couple, Robert may or may not have
been the eldest child. The birthdate of James Martin has also been
extrapolated from the births of his children. We know from census records and
Wills that three of James Martin's sons (Robert, James, and John) did travel to
and help settle the western half of Holmes County, Ohio in Monroe Twp. They
remained there until their deaths, as did their descendents, up to the present
day.
