Lewis, John M., was born near Noblestown, North Fayette township, Allegheny county, Penna, February 25, 1824, on the old homestead of his father and grandfather, a son of John Lewis and Margaret McClellan Lewis. Mrs Lewis was a daughter of Alexander and Nancy McClellan, old settlers of North Fayette township.

John Lewis was born in Westmoreland county, Penna, a son of William Lewis, who was born in Easton, Penna, and was one of the earliest settlers of North Fayette township, Allegheny county, Penna. He married a Miss McAllister and moved to Montgomery county, Penna.

John and Margaret McClellan Lewis married and settled on the old homestead in North Fayette township. They were Presbyterian and had thirteen children. The living are: Alexander P Lewis; John M Lewis; James Mc Lewis; Nancy Lewis, widow of Robert Stevenson; Mary Lewis, wife of Joseph Hamilton.

Our subject married February 10, 1848, Elizabeth J Stewart, born in Findlay township, daughter of James Stewart and Isabella Gladden Stewart. Her father was born in Findlay township, a son of James Stewart and Margaret McCune Stewart, early settlers of Findlay. Mr and Mrs Lewis settled on their present farm soon after their marriage.

They had five children: J Stewart Lewis married Ella Hamilton, residing in Washington county, Penna; Margaret M Lewis married Murray Cook, residing in Washington County; John P A Lewis, deceased, married Jennie Harper; Mary Lewis married R C Hamilton, residing in Findlay township; Wilson McB L Lewis married Maggie Ayel (Ayer?), residing in Findlay. Mr Lewis owns 107 acres of land; he has held office of township collector, treasurer and constable. He and Mrs Lewis are members of the Presbyterian church at Hebron.
