The Forty-ninth regiment included men from Mifflin, Juniata and some men from Union and Perry counties. The Juniata county company was commanded by Captain Calvin DeWitt. The regiment met at Camp Curtin Harrisburg and was organized September 1861. They left Harrisburg on the 22nd and upon reaching Washington D.C. were assigned to Brigadier-General W.S. Hancock's (First) brigade of General "Baldy" Smith's division of the Fourth Corps commanded by Major General Erasmus D. Keyes. On the 4 Apr they moved with the army of the Potomac till they were in front of the enemy extending from Yorktown to the James River. and on the 5 May fought near Williamsburg taking many prisoners. The army then advanced by waly of Old Church and Cold Harbor to the Chickahominy in the vicinity of New Bridge. They next engaged the enemy at Peach Orchard lossing 33 killed or wounded. At Harrison's Landing the regiment suffered from sickness. They next took part in the engagement at Crampton's Gap. Attacked at Rappahannock Station taking prisoners 1600 Confederates along with artillery and large amounts of ammunition and small arms. Between 1861 September and 15 Jul 1865, the regiment was in the following battles: Williamsburg, Garnett's Hill, 27 Jun 1862, Golding's Farm, 28 Jun, Savage Station, 29 Jun, Crampton's Gap, Sep 14, Antietam, 17 Sep. Mud March, Fredericksburg, Fairview, Va. 3 May 1863, Salem Church, 4 May 1863, Gettyburg, Jul 2-3, Rappahannock Station, 7 Nov 1863, Mine Run, Nov 26-28, Germania Plank Road, 3 May 1864, Spottsylvania Court House, May 7 to 14, Cold Harbor, 1 Jun, Winchester, 19 Sep 1864, Sailor's Creek, 3 Apr 1865. Of nearly 1000 men, three hundred and eighty were killed or wounded.
