The regiment was organized 1 Sep 1861 under Colonel George D. Bayard, previously of the Fourth U.S. Cavalry. The regiment joined McCall's division of Pa. Reserves at Tenallytown Md. and remained untill 10 October, then moving to Camp Pierpont Va. for the winter. They were in the battle of Dranesville and were used for scouting, picket duty and drill. In the spring of 1862 under General McClellan, the First Cavalry moved to Manasas and Centreville. They were called to move to the Shenandoah Valley against Stonewall Jackson. At Strasburg the 1 June they engaged the enemy and again at Harrisonburg Va. The 8th and 9th they fought at Cross Keys and Port Republic. In all, that month, they rode and fought over four hundred miles. At the battle of Cedar Mountain they saved a battery from capture. During the retreat of General Pope, they held Thoroughfare Gap turnpike for six hours against a heavy force under General Longstreet. On the 29 & 30 they fought at Second Bull Run. afterwards being used as guards for the nation's capital for 6 weeks. They fought at Fredericksburg on the 13th but not in the main battle and then went into winter quarters at Belle Plain. On the 10 June 1863 fought at Brandy Station. During the battle of Gettysburg acted as rear guard to the headquarters of the commanding general. Engaged the enemy at Shepherdstown on the 16 July. The 14 October engaged them again at Auburn Va. and fighting at Mine Run captured 28 prisoners. The wintered at Stevensburg. The spring brought them to Todd's Tavern on the 5 May 1864 and then again on the 7th. On the 9th moved with the cavalry column of General Sheridan and fought at Richmond, Ashland, Hungary Station, Yellow Tavern and Meadow Bridge, near Richmond. Returning to the army of the Potomac fought at Hawes' Shop on the 28th and again at Barker's Mills. After this they continued to march and move almost constantly. The fought at Trevillian Station, St. Mary's Church, Ream's Station, Malvern Hill, Lee's Mills, Gravel Hill, and again at Ream's Station. On the 20 August the order for their relief of duty came at Jerusalem Plank Road. On the 1 Sept. the regiment was withdrawn and proceded to Philadelphia and were mustered out 9 Sep 1864.
