This regiment was raised in the western part of the state and organized in the fall of 1861 at Camp Curtin under Colonel Joseph Wilson. They were attached to a division under General Silas Casey at Meridian Hill, Washington D.C. on the 27 Feb 1862. At the Virginia Peninsula they were part of the campaign of 1862 under General McClellan. Engaged in the battle of Williamsburg, and again at Fair Oaks on May 31 and Jun 1 losing one third killed and wounded. A month later was in the Seven Days's battle and stayed six weeks at Harrison's Landing. In Dec 14 was in a battle at Newburn N.C. and from there went into winter quarters and remained in North Carolina. In Apr 1864 was part of siege of Little Washington. and was in the battle of Plymouth, where nearly the entire regiment was taken prisoners and many died in the prison-pens of the South. Some of the officers and men were absent on leave and more were sick at Roanoke Island. When they recovered they and one hundred recruits were fromed into a detachment and placed on duty as a part of the garrison of Roanoke Island. The returning prisoners joined themselves as fast as paroled and in March 1865, eight newly raised companies were added but never really became a part of the regiment and were mustered out 25 Jun 1865.
