It is now my thought the our John Outcelt is the son of Frederick Outgelt and that John was born in New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey and moved with his father to Bedford, Pennsyvania. where he married and then on to Muskingum, County, Ohio about 1818 because Muskingum Co. History said his home used as preachig place p 369. 1860 Census places his birth in New Jersey. Church records put his baptism in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Head stone found by (Doris Loos) place his death in Salt Creek Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio and birth in 1789 and only 1 month before his Baptism. The 1790 Census places his father in Bedford Co., Pa. Also the 1790 Census places John's father in law Jacob Mc Lain in Bedford Co., Pa. where John Outcelt and Rebecca Mc Lain probably married. I believe this is the Key because it puts John and Rebecca in Pennsylvania in 1814 at the Birth of Adeline their first child. So we have proof that John lived in Pennsylvania after he lived in New Jersey and before he moved to Muskingum County, Ohio. In the Bedford County Pa. Rebecca was only child mentioned in her fathers Last Will and Testament Muskingum Co. Ohio Wills book C page 86 LDS film 317300 !Rebecca came from Bedford, Pennsylvana. The reason I believe that is her husband John lived there during the time that she married John Outkelt and he lived there from about 1790 through about 1818. All records indicate that Jacob Her father lived in Bedford county several year before Rebecca was born. It is now established through land record that Jacob, Rebecca's father lived in Bedford County, Pennsylvania the 1780 until about 1812. So Rebecca would have to be born in Bedford County. Rebecca's father is recorded in the 1790 Census of Bedford County, Pa. which tends to agree with John and Rebecca gettomg married in Bedford County, Pa. !Rebecca Mc Lain the wife of John Outcelt sold a parcel of land to her husband John Outcelt 4 December 1844. Notes for Fredrick OUTCALT Fredrick Outcalt the son of John Outcalt and Rebecca McLain: Fredrick was very young when he left his birth place. His mother and father moved the family in late 1818 to Muskingum County, Ohio and settled in Salt Creek Township. Fredrick grew up here and received his primary education here. When as a young man he purchased a lot in Chandlerville. Soon after he removed to Blue Creek Township, Adams County, Indiana and purchased in December 1836 a farm. Then in 1846 he married Elizabeth Scoles. Fredrick became a minister of the Gospel and wass very prominent in Adams County. One of the first schools in his area was named after the Outcalt Family. Most of Fredrick and Elizabeth's children were born in Indiana. Then in about 1855 Fredrick and Elizabeth removed their family tio Richland County, Wisconsin. His first purchase of land was in Bloom Township, Richaland County. Fredrick purchased and sold many parcels of land the remainder of his life in Richland county. Willow township seems to be where he and his family settled although he preached the Gospel in many townships throughout the county. The first United Brethren Society organized in the area was in the residence of Moses Bible on Sec 35 in Westford Township in the spring of 1857 by Fredrick. He organized another group in Kake Hollow. As in Adams County, Indiana he became very prominent in Richland County, Wisconsin. Zeasman of Seattle, Washington has a birth date for Fredrick Outcalt, (a brother of Susan Outcalt) of 9 March 1918 which conflicts with the 4 September 1818 birth of Susan Outcalt. Head Stone in Shaul Cemetery Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa. Susan Outcalt birth 4 September 1818 in records of the Shaul Cemetery. This makes a 5 month discrepancy in the date of the birth as recorded in the center pages of the Bowlin Bible which is 4 February 1819. I believce the Bible could be corect for Susan Outcalt. On the Head Stone the death date is 17 Feb 1898 at age: 79 years, 5 months, and 13 days. Doris E. (Welch) Loos P. O. Box 2230 Bowling Green, Ky 42102-2230 has come to the conclusion that the birth of Susan was 4 September 1818. If the Fredrick Outcalt birth is correct then the 4 February 1819 birth date for Susan Outcalt would be more practical. I have a letter dated Mar 9, 1917 from Jessie Ward who was living in Sacramento California. States that Susan's birth was February 4, 1819. This would agree more with Ira M. Zeasman birth date for Fredrick Outcalt's birth of 9 March 1818. Fredrick is a brother of Susan Outcalt. Jessie is daughter of Charles Ward who is son of William F. Ward and Susan Outcalt. Letter was written to Maud Lillian Bowlin Grand-daughter to Susan Outcalt. Hester Tallman had many documents of the Tallman Family when she passed away that would be of great value to the History of the Tallman, Bowlin, Ward, and Outcelt families. There has been no contact with any one close to her since her death. Her records may help to clear this question up. BIR:DEA:from Family Group sheet of Ira M. Zeasman, 2617 S.W. 120th Seattle, Washington 98146. listed birth as 9 March 1818 (1819 on D.C.). I have to question birth of 1818 because Fredrick's older sister Susan Outcalt buried in Shaul Cemetery Ottumwa, Wapello County Iowa and her birth and death are recorded on her marker. Born 4 September 1818 and died 17 Feb 1898. Also Susan was born in Muskingum County, Ohio which would likely made Fredrick's birth place the same. Other very valuable information is Fredrick's burial is Upper Big Willow, Richland County, Wisc. Recorded in Vol. F page 51 death records. That He was a preacher. Fredrick Outcalt purchased and sold land in Richland County, Wisconsin from 1855 until his death as recorded in the Land records of Richland County, Wisc. I now believe the Fredrick's birth date is firm and also that Susan his younger sister was born 4 February 1819 as the Bowlin Bible states. Also that Fredrick was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania and his parents moved to Muskingum County, Ohio soon after and that Susan Outcalt was born in Muskingum County, Ohio. "Buck Creek Recolledtions" by Ruth Brewer Andrew Outcalt was a most interesting character. He was a very brilliant man and an excellent public speaker. His hobby was flight. He borrowed and studied my mother's physics books. He then designed two kinds of flying machines. On had flapping wings in which he tried to simulate a bird in flight. The other was a screw tipe plane. Not unlike the modern helicopter. He hung this device on the bar of his scales and then cranked the propeller screw with a long flexible rod. In this way he could weigh the device when not in operation and then determine the lift by measuring the decrease in weight when in operation. Had he placed emphasis on the device instead of the flapping wings he might have gone down in history as a great inventor. January 21, 1910 A.S. This is confirmed by a statement in the History of Allen County, Indiana (Marion Township) by L. H. Newton. Q977.274 H2h page 157. "After 1836, a number of families settled in various parts of the township. Some remained but a short time, and a complete list of names would add length without adding interest to the history. Prominent among those who came prior to 1840 were .......... Judge Nelson McLAIN, William Ward and Daniel McLane. (Nelson McLAIN is a cousin to Susan (Outcelt), Ward's mother)". NATURAL FEATURES OF MARION TOWNSHIP. The surface of the township is slightly undulating; the soil, a rich, sandy loam, and very productive. St. Mary's River flows from northwest to southeast. Merriam's Creek has its source in the eastern part of the township, and flows in a northwesterly direction. joining St. Mary's River at a point on Section 6. Among the timber which formerly covered the surface was black walnut and white walnut, oak, ash, birch, maple, etc., only a small proportion of which now remains. The market demand for this class of timber has resulted in its disappearance from the forests of this vicinity, and skillfully tilled farms have taken its place. When William left the Army in 1865 he went directly to Wapello County, Iowa where his parents had moved to and were living, and not back to Somerset County, Pennsylvania where he left from. With no other evidence I believed incorrectly that he married Mary Jane Ward in Wapello County, Iowa. QUOTATION:From a letter written by Maud Lillian Bowlin to her sister Fern Bowlin (Mary Jane Ward's daughter's). "Poor mother- - I think none of us knew her. I knew some of the things in her life that I feel sure hade much to do with her self communion and her communion with God. I think I can truly say there was a time when she was joyful-effervescent. Never, in my knowledge, was there anything frivolous in word or manner, so far as I can remember. But I can remember when she sang joyfully religious hymns and even such as "Silver Threads Among the Gold." and when father sang "Do you love me Molly Darling". But there came things that changed all that and she withdrew within herself a sesitive soul---deeply religious. "Do you know that in her Bible the book of Psalms was worn to shreds. So she found her comfort in praise to the end. When she lay on her death-bed one evening when I was at work or busy in the other room. I heard her saying to herself "all alone, all alone."" MARY JANE WARD OBITUARY "Mary Jane Ward was born in Allen County, Indiana, July 21 1849, and died at Byron California, October 15, 1922 at the age of 73 years, 2 Months and 24 days. She attended the Young Ladies Seminary at Fort Wayne Indiana, in her girlhood, and moved with her parents to Ottumwa, Iowa in 1868 where she taught school one year. There she met and married W. H. BOWLIN on November 4, 1869. To this union were born four children---Mrs. Maud Tallman of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Fern Rhodes of Monroe, Wash; Joseph Arthur Bowlin of Kansas City, Kan; and Lore Bowlin of Sacramento, Cal. During her married life she lived with her husband and family at Harlan, Iowa, Cumberland, Iowa and later at Byron, Calif. She united in young womanhood with the Methodist Episcopal Church and during her active years gave her help to every good work. She was a devout Christian wife and mother, teaching her children faith in God and His answer to prayer. She leaves, besides her husband and children, two sisters, two brothers, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild (Victor Gunn)." William Henry BOWLIN the son of Joseph BOWLIN and Barbara AYERS. William was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania on 24 January 1845. He died in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa on 20 March 1926, and is buried in the Glendale Cemetery Des Moines, Iowa. With his parents William lived in Somerfield, Addison Township, Somerset County, Pa. Then unlike most of the family of Joseph and Barbara BOWLIN who left for Wapello County, Iowa by early 1864. William stayed in Somerset County, Pa., because on 18 February 1864 in Harrisburg he enrolled as private in Co. 'B' 18th Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry a few days before turning nineteen. He mustered into the service 20 February 1864. Almost a year and a half later William was promoted to corporal and transferred to Co. 'B' 3rd Provisional Cavalry. This was on July 14, 1865. Among some of Maud Lillian BOWLIN's papers (Maud is the daughter of William Henry BOWLIN) was recorded some of the engagements in which William took part: The Wilderness, on May 5-6, 1864 then Spotsylvania Courthouse May 8-12, 1864, followed by small encounters until Petersburg which didn't come until 2 April 1865, William was very fortunate for the above engagements were part of Gen. Grant's campaign and in May alone the North lost 60,000 men. Shortly after Petersburg the war was over and on 31 October 1865, William Henry BOWLIN was discharged from the Army. Surely William headed for Dahlonega Wapello County, Iowa where his parents lived. It is not known when or why he went to Keokuk, Iowa but that's where he married Mary Jane WARD on 4 November 1869. Not long after he removed to Dahloniga, Wapello County, Iowa because his oldest daughter was born there. 55 vii Evan B.4 WARD [621], born 16 Apr 1852 in Marion Twp, Allen, In; died 2 Oct 1928 in , Wapello, Iowa; buried 4 Oct 1928 in Shaul Cemetery, Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa. !Obituary from Ottumwa Daily Courier, Printed October 2, 1928.
