WELLINGTON JARVIS
1829 - 1908
Saturday evening at six o'clock Wellington Jarvis, an honorable and well known citizen of Warren was summoned by death at his home on Second street. For two years Mr. Jarvis had been in failing health and death was the result of a stroke of paralysis which he suffered a few weeks ago. For days his condition was hopeless.
Deceased was a man respected for his integrity. He was a firm believer in the Christian faith and for many years a member of the Presbyterian church. His demise will be mourned especially by his family to whom he was lovingly devoted, his neighbors and the community in general.
Wellington Jarvis was born Aug. 20, 1829 at Albany, N. Y. In 1853 he married Isabella L. Stone, of Rensselaerville, N. Y. He engaged in the dry goods trade in New York city and remained in that business in the metropolis until 1887, where he closed out his interests. Soon after that he bought the interest of O. H. Hunter of the dry goods firm of O. H. Hunter and Son, this city. In a few years he purchased the interest of H. P. Hunter in the business and became sole owner. In 1898 Mr. H. W. Baker became a partner in the business, which continued as Jarvis and Baker until 1907 when, owing to failing health Mr. Jarvis sold his interst to Baker and Johnson and retired from all active business.
A year ago his wife preceded him to their final earthly resting place in Greenwood cemetery, Brooklyn, N. Y., where seven of their children were laid many years ago. Their surviving children are Mrs. F. C. Schaefer, Brooklyn, N. Y., Mrs. T. O. Slater and Miss Louise H. Jarvis, Warren.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock from the home and will be conducted by Rev. J. W. Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. The remains will be taken to Brooklyn Tuesday evening and the interment will be made Wednesday.
