Almost hidden by these burning bush shrubs, the Hale Cemetery sign is on a steep bank midway along Akeley Road. |
Hale Cemetery, situated in a beautiful farming valley, is dominated by a massive oak tree. This is an active medium-size cemetery at the intersection of Akeley and Gouldtown roads. While the cemetery sign is not obvious, the cemetery is clearly visible from the road. A dirt road, accessible from both Akeley and Gouldtown roads, makes a loop around the south and east sides of the grounds. The cemetery is well maintained with many old tombstones near the oak.

Driving directions from the Hickory Street bridge in Warren: Drive east on Pennsylvania Ave W/US-6 (business route) to Market Street. Turn left on Market Street and drive north through Warren, North Warren, and past Warren State Hospital. Market Street turns into US 62. Drive straight through the intersection of US 62 and PA 957 at Russell. Watch for the sign to the village of Akeley on the right. Make a slight right onto Akeley Road and in the village of Akeley, turn left to continue north on Akeley Road. Cemetery is clearly visible from the road; look for the immense oak tree as the first sign that you are approaching the grounds. The dirt road leading into the grounds is on the right at the edge of the cemetery, well before the Gouldtown intersection. If you miss the turnoff, continue to Gouldtown Road, turn right, and look for the dirt road on the right to circle back into the cemetery. |
