The following information was extracted from
the book, History of Perry County Pennsylvania; H. H. Hain; Hain-Moore Co.;
Harrisburg, Pa.; 1922. Chapter XVIII.
During the summer of 1856 Rev. John B. Strain opened an academy, known as Duane
Academy, in the dwelling of Mr. Jacob Super, near St. Samuel's Lutheran Church,
in Juniata Township. It was later conducted in the schoolhouse which stood
on the ground now occupied by St. Samuel's Church. Rev. Strain had as his
assistant his sister, Miss Hannah Strain. Dr. C. W. Super, later president
of the Ohio University, now of Athens, Ohio, attended this school for a
term. Another student was the late Prof. W. C. Shuman, long principal of
the Chicago Evening Schools, and a teacher in the Cook County Normal
School.
