New-School Presbyterian Church

The New-School Presbyterian Church.—Some time in 1837-38, a number of families separated from the First Presbyterian Church, and were organized into a church with the above title. The Rev. Philo C. Pettibone was the first (and only) pastor, and remained two years.

The church rapidly increased in numbers, until there were, altogether, about 200 members. It had occasional supplies, and labored hard to keep up its existence; but, in a few years, the falling off was so great that it finally disbanded, and the denomination is unknown in the borough at present.

The New School Presbyterians were organized about 1837 by Rev. Philo C. Pettibone, from members who left the First Presbyterian Church. Its membership increased rapidly until it reached 200, but gradually diminished until it became extinct. Mr. Pettibone was the only pastor, remaining about two years. After his departure “supplies” were insufficient to keep this member of the numerous branches of Presbyterianism in existence.
