Societies
It is hard to conceive of a flourishing
Catholic parish without immediately thinking of its societies.
Providing as they do for the material needs of a parish, and setting
its spiritual tone, they are truly of inestimable help to every pastor
of souls. For the record, and because we wish to acknowledge our debt
to those early societies that pioneered in the fields of Catholic
Action in Greenville, we list their names below: The Catholic Mutual
Benefit Association, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Knights of
Saint John, and the Knights of Columbus. All of the above were
organizations for the men of the parish. For the women we find: The
Rosary Society, The Ladies' Catholic Benevolent Association, and the
Catholic Daughters of America.
Flourishing
today and carrying on the work begun by the pioneer organizations are
the following: The Altar and Rosary Society with a membership of 145;
the Infant of Prague Guild with a membership of 140; Saint Michael’s
Athletic Association with a membership of 130; the Knights of Columbus
with a membership of 160; St. Michael’s High School Sodality of the
Blessed Mother under title of Our Lady of Victory with a membership of
100; Saint Michael’s Dramatic Society with a membership of 65 under the
direction of Father James J. Kearns;
the Boy Scouts with a membership of 20; the Girl Scouts with a
membership of 61; and the Newman Club with a membership of 50.
Because
of the splendid work done by each of these societies we feel it is only
proper to record for posterity the names of the various office-holders
in this our Centennial year [1950].
