Another Old Settler Removed
Died,
at Sheakleyville, on the morning of October 11th, Mr. Thomas H.
Philips, in the 75th year of his age. The deceased was one of the
oldest settlers in Sandy Creek township, having spent all his life on
or near the old homestead. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and seven
children, besides a host of friends.
"Uncle Thomas" was in every
sense the poor man's friend, ever ready to help not only by kind words,
but in acts of love. His hand and pocket were ever open to help the
unfortunate and needy.
He was a prominent and faithful member of
the Georgetown Baptist Church. The church, in token of love, was
appropriately draped. Young and old alike exclaimed: "Uncle Tommy, we
greatly miss thee. Thy seat is vacant."
During his sickness his
family were once more summoned together. Some from the far West and
some from the East, and did all in their power to cheer his last
moments.
There stood around his grave five sons and two
sons-in-law, who, with gentle and loving hands, laid his mortal remains
to rest, and, with sad hearts, performed the last act of the living for
the dead.
