Mrs. Cyntha Sheakley,
relict of the late Geo. Sheakley, died at the residence of her son,
Robert Sheakley near Sheakleyville, on Friday morning of last week. She
had reached the ripe age of 81. The deceased, who was an aunt of Hon.
Jas. Sheakley and W. H. Sheakley, Esq., of this place, was the daughter
of Jos. Culberson, one of the early pioneers of Northwestern
Pennsylvania. She was married to Geo. Sheakley, the founder of the town
which now bears his name, in 1824, where they lived until 1856, when
they removed to the farm now owned and occupied by Robert Sheakley, one
h alf mile east of the then primitive village of Georgetown, now known
as Sheakleyville, where she lived until her death. Like most of the
early settlers, they raised a large family who have lied to see them
placed in their last resting place. In early life she became a member
of the Church, and during her long life lived a faithful Christian.
Like many of her early associates, she saw the wild woods hewn down by
the strong arms of the early settler, and where the giant oak once
stood, to see her own home reared, and with it the homes of those who
now call Sheakleyville their home. Thus another old landmark has passed
away, and the places that once knew the early pioneers shall soon know
them no more..
