James
J. Mossman was born in Baltimore County, Maryland on December 19, 1796
to John & Jane (McGowan) Mossman. John & Jane came from Ireland
on March 25, 1790 to Wilmington, Delaware. On July 28, 1835 James married Elizabeth Thompson, a daughter of Aquilla and Susan Thompson. Elizabeth was born June 5, 1814. James
J. died in West Salem Township, Mercer County, Pa. on March 6, 1878.
Rev. R. J. White preached Mr. Mossman's funeral. Elizabeth died
November 3, 1886. Rev. Ninian C. Foulk preached her funeral. Both James
and Elizabeth are buried in Rock Ridge Cemetery, West Salem Township,
Merer County, Pa. in the back part where there is a large round shaped
rock with Mossman carved on it.
Their children were: 1) Reuben born Sept. 21, 1839. Married Louisa L. Brockway of Rome, Ohio on Dec. 28, 1864. 2) John A. was born in 1837 was married to Cornelia McConnell, who was born in 1847. 3) James 4) Margaret married a Gillis 5) Mary married a Mitchelltree. She died young during the birth of a child. 6) Susan never married.
All the children are buried in Rock Ridge Cemetery.
John A. & Cornelia (McConnell) Mossman's children were: 1)
Adda Bell Mossman, born Sunday Aug. 18, 1864 in a house owned by her
grandfather, James Mossman. She married Aaron Helsel on May 17, 1894
and had the following children: Lorin Carl, Hazel and Nina Bell. 2) Van Wert Mossman, born Friday, Dec. 1, 1865 in a house owned by Lester
Melvin. He married Rosa Kitch and their children were Ralph, Albert and
Myrtle. 3)
Wilbur Mossman born Sunday, Mar. 13, 1870 near the Swamp Church. He
first married Ella Wheeler. She died late in May 1919 and he then
married Mary Davis. No children. 4) Mina May Mossman, born
Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1873 at 6 a.m. in a house owned by Peter Hoffman.
She married Martin George Seyler, May 17, 1894 and had the following
children: Clarence Leroy, Bertha May, Don Cameron, and Bessie Ann. Martin Seyler died and she later married Frank Leslie Wilt. 5)
Milton Mossman, born Thursday, Jan. 14, 1877 between 6 and 7 a.m. He
first married Clara Green. They divorced and he later married Mary
Steelsmith. Milton died in the fall of 1916 and a daughter, Pearl, was
born about six months later.
