William
came to the United States when he was fifteen years old. His mother,
who was then a widow started out on the voyage with her three children
of whom William was the oldest. There was a Daughter next to him and
another son the youngest. The mother (Angeline Booth) took ill on the
way and died and was buried at sea. Her maiden name was Harvey and she
was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. William had two Uncles, Andrew
and James Booth already living in the U.S.A. One of the Uncles met the
children when they arrived on this side of the ocean. William was born
between 1780 - 1790 and died in September or October 1836. He married
Sarah Searight, the daughter of James Searight. She was born about 1800
and died April 14, 1837.
In 1820 the Federal Census listed
William & Sarah living in what is now South Pymatuning Township,
Mercer County, Pennsylvania. At that time they had one son and one
daughter under ten years of age. There is a deed on file at the Court
House in Mercer, Pa. showing that William purchased fifty acres of land
and buildings from his Uncle Andrew Booth on March 7, 1821. At the end
of five years Andrew was to make William a clear deed to this fifty
acres and fifty one acres more adjoining it directly on the south.
William was to pay Andrew one hundred and fifty dollars total. The
number of the deed is G - 1 - 110. There is also another deed
showing that William sold this property to John McClurg early in
1830. William and Sarah moved to Delaware Township in the part that is
now Jefferson Township, Mercer County, Pa. in 1830. William purchased
two hundred acres there from Ann Searight for two hundred dollars. The
deed was made on January 8, 1830. It is not known where William
& Sarah are buried. After their deaths, Bevan Pearson of Mercer,
Pa. was appointed guardian for the children.
Their children were: 1.
Ann, born January 31, 1818 & died November 27, 1897. Married Andrew
Snyder and lived in Delaware Township, Mercer County, Pa. 2. Robert
Harvey born in 1819 or 1820; Died March 6, 1896. Married Cordelia
Bacon. She was born November 12, 1821 along the Unidilla River in New
York. She died in February 1907. Her parents were Sabina and Eunice
(Moss) Bacon. 3. Andrew Jackson born 1822. He lived in California, having gone there in 1849. 4. Mary born 1824; Married a Dickson and lived in St. Louis, Missouri. 5.
Angelina, born November 22, 1827; Died December 23, 1905. Married Henry
Greenlee and lived at what is now Arbuckle, West Virginia. 6. Maria, born 1828; Married David Loydd and lived in Butler County, Pa. 7. Cynthia, born 1830; Married John D. Jones and lived at Palmyra, Portage County, Ohio. 8. Sarah, born 1836 or 1837; Lived in Jefferson Township, Mercer County, Pa. She was still living in 1914. 9. Harriet, birth date unknown died when she was a small child.
