HERMAN
FRANKEL, popular for so many years in Mercer as a clothing merchant,
was born in the beautiful city of Berlin, Germany, July 22, 1844. He
received a good education in his native city, leaving school at the age
of nineteen years; he met the requirements of military service and then
emigrated to America in 1868, coming to our shores alone. He went to
Greenville, Pennsylvania, where he was employed in the clothing house
of Nathan Block for a period of almost four years. In 1871 he
located at Mercer, and commenced his real career as a clothier on his
own ac count. In 1872 he admitted R. R. Wright as a partner in the
clothing business, and this partnership existed for sixteen years. Mr.
Wright sold his interest in 1890, and thirteen years later M. K.
Hefling was taken into partnership, when the style of the firm was the
Herman Frankel Company, which is still in existence.
Mr. Frankel
erected his present store building, a substantial brick structure, in
1874. He has been active and progressive in the building of Mercer and
vicinity; has taken much interest in educational a airs and been a
loyal citizen in this his adopted country. He is now treasurer of the
Academy. He has long been one of the directors of the First National
Bank of Mercer and has held the position of town councilman. In his
politics, Mr. Frankel is a supporter of the Republican party.
Fraternally, he is connected with the Masonic order, belonging to
Sharon Chapter and Mercer Blue lodge. He was united in marriage in 1882
to Miss Mary Zahniser, daughter of Rev. George Zahniser.
His
manner is generous to a fault; he is kind in disposition and grateful
for all favors shown him; not unmindful of the rights of others; a
stanch friend, who believes life should be made up of more than greed
and selfishness. He counts his friends by the legion.
