The
first store [in Delaware Township] was built at Delaware Grove, in the
southern part of the township, in the fall of 1834, by James
T. Black, who was likewise the first postmaster.
The
Post-office was established there in 1835, in the large building where
it still remains [1877]. Mr. Black was an active and capable man,
and during his residence, the "Grove" became a business center
for the surrounding country. Shops |
of
various kinds sprang up, and a large hotel was built, which is still open
for guests [1877]. After a short residence, Mr.
Black, who had previously been considered a man of unsullied
integrity, left his home and business in a mysterious manner and never
returned. His wife still [1877] occupies the old place. He
died recently in one of the Western States.
